US Relocates Military Aircraft from Spain Amid Rising Tensions
The United States has relocated 15 aircraft from military bases in southern Spain, a move that comes amid escalating tensions between the two nations following trade threats from former President Donald Trump. This decision has raised concerns about the future of US-Spain relations, particularly in light of Spain’s refusal to allow the US military to use its bases for operations linked to strikes on Iran.
In a statement, Trump expressed frustration, saying, “We’re going to cut off all trade with Spain. We don’t want anything to do with Spain.” This sentiment reflects a growing rift as Spain condemned US and Israeli attacks on Iran, labeling them a breach of international law. The Spanish government has maintained that its military bases are under Spanish sovereignty but are jointly operated with the US.
Trade figures reveal the economic interdependence between the two countries, with the US having a trade surplus of $4.8 billion with Spain in 2025. US exports to Spain amounted to $26.1 billion, while imports from Spain were $21.3 billion. Despite this, Spain has resisted US calls for NATO members to allocate 5% of their GDP to defense by 2035, further straining relations.
Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares emphasized that Spanish bases are not being used for operations outside the agreed framework with the United States, stating, “Spanish bases are not being used for this operation, and they will not be used for anything not included in the agreement with the United States.” This assertion underscores Spain’s commitment to maintaining its sovereignty while navigating complex international pressures.
Historically, Spain has faced criticism from Trump for its foreign policy decisions, including its refusal to allow vessels transporting weapons to Israel to dock in Spanish ports. This pattern of disagreement has contributed to a tense diplomatic environment, with both nations now at a crossroads.
The Spanish government has responded to Trump’s threats by asserting that it has the necessary resources to mitigate the potential impact of a trade embargo. A spokesperson stated, “We have the necessary resources to contain the possible impact of the trade embargo by the US,” indicating Spain’s readiness to withstand economic pressures.
As the situation develops, observers are keenly watching how these tensions will affect broader international relations, particularly within the context of NATO and trade agreements. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the long-term implications of the US’s military repositioning and Trump’s trade threats.
