Colonel Sandeep Srivastava Files Complaint Over Online Fraud

A 67-year-old retired Army colonel from Ambegaon Khurd, Colonel Sandeep Srivastava, has lodged a complaint with the Pune cyber police regarding a significant online fraud incident. The complaint details a loss of Rs 1.03 crore that Srivastava incurred through online share trading fraud between October and December of the previous year.

The retired Army officer’s ordeal began when his phone number was added to a messaging application group in October. The group administrator promised high returns on investments in online trading, which lured Srivastava into transferring money to 15 different bank accounts as instructed. Initially, the application showed a profit of more than Rs 4 crore after he transferred money, leading him to believe he was making a sound investment.

According to Senior Inspector Swapnali Shinde, “The victim stays with his family,” indicating that the impact of this fraud extends beyond financial loss, affecting his personal life as well. The case highlights the growing prevalence of online scams, particularly targeting individuals who may be less familiar with digital investment platforms.

In a broader context, Colonel Srivastava’s experience reflects a troubling trend in online fraud, where scammers exploit the trust of individuals, especially those from backgrounds that may not be as tech-savvy. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and skepticism when approached with investment opportunities online.

In a separate development, Colonel Sandeep Srivastava has also opened a homestay in Kathwara village along the Lucknow highway. This venture was suggested by his daughter as a way to fill the emptiness felt after their children moved abroad. The homestay charges Rs 1,500 for a room and is part of a larger initiative in Uttar Pradesh, where 750 certified homestays have been established since the introduction of the Bed and Breakfast and Home Stay Policy, 2025.

The government aims to establish 50,000 homestays across the state, promoting tourism and providing opportunities for local residents. Colonel Srivastava expressed his sentiments about the homestay, stating, “What began as an idea from my daughter has turned into something that keeps us engaged and connected with people.”

In a related note, Bollywood actor Salman Khan recently referred to his character’s look in the film ‘Battle of Galwan’ as a “colonel’s look” during an event, emphasizing the cultural significance and respect associated with the title of colonel in Indian society. Khan remarked, “But I’m a colonel, brother and this is a colonel’s look, who understands how to motivate his soldiers,” highlighting the pride and responsibility that comes with the rank.

As the investigation into Colonel Srivastava’s fraud case continues, authorities are urging individuals to remain cautious and informed about potential online scams. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the fraud and the identities of those involved.
