Charles leclerc finishes third in Melbourne season opener
Leclerc’s Performance in Melbourne
Charles Leclerc finished third in the season-opener in Melbourne on March 8, 2026, demonstrating a strong performance despite starting fourth on the grid.
Leclerc was positively surprised by Ferrari’s performance during the race, especially after qualifying. He stated, “I am positively surprised, for sure, after qualifying yesterday.” His strong start allowed him to move past competitors George Russell and Kimi Antonelli early in the race.
Race Strategy and Challenges
Despite his podium finish, Leclerc acknowledged that a lot of work is needed for Ferrari to catch up to Mercedes, whose drivers executed a successful strategy during an early virtual safety car phase. Leclerc admitted, “We’ve got a lot of work to do, but it’s only the first race and it’s going to be a championship won with development.”
Leclerc’s teammate, Lewis Hamilton, finished fourth in the race, highlighting the competitive nature of the event. The race consisted of 58 laps, with a pivotal moment occurring on lap 12 when Ferrari opted to keep its drivers out during the virtual safety car, a decision Leclerc later stated he did not regret, saying, “I don’t regret it. It was a conscious choice.”
Looking Ahead
While Leclerc expressed satisfaction with his performance, he noted that the car felt strange and that he was not in the right window of the set-up during the race. He indicated that improvements in start procedures are necessary as the team looks to enhance their performance in upcoming races. “It was very suboptimal, I think, for everybody,” he remarked.
As the season progresses, Ferrari will need to focus on development and upgrades to remain competitive against Mercedes and other teams. The opening race in Melbourne sets the tone for what promises to be an exciting season in Formula 1.
