giraffe 1x radar — IN news

An unidentified kamikaze drone has struck a Giraffe-1X radar station operated by the US Armed Forces on the roof of the US embassy in Baghdad. This incident raises critical questions about the effectiveness of current air defense systems in urban environments.

The Giraffe-1X radar, which the US military recently began acquiring, was designed specifically for counter-unmanned aerial vehicle (C-UAS) operations. The radar system provides air defense against drones and other aerial threats, capable of detecting air targets up to 75 kilometers away.

Saab, the manufacturer of the Giraffe-1X radar, announced a $103 million contract for these systems, with the first order placed in October 2025. The radar is notable for its lightweight design, weighing under 150 kilograms, and its ability to track over 100 objects simultaneously.

Equipped with advanced software, the Giraffe-1X radar can distinguish between birds and drones, significantly reducing false alarms. This feature is particularly important in urban settings where various aerial activities occur.

Furthermore, the radar is engineered for rapid deployment in challenging terrains, making it suitable for various operational scenarios. Its integration with modern air defense fire control systems enhances its utility in protecting critical assets.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the extent of the damage caused by the drone strike and whether any personnel were injured. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by military forces in securing their installations against evolving aerial threats.

As the situation develops, further assessments of the Giraffe-1X radar’s performance and the implications for US military operations in the region are anticipated. This event may prompt a reevaluation of current air defense strategies and technologies employed by the US Armed Forces.
