post office — IN news

Parmod Kalia, a former post office branch manager, has died at the age of 67 without receiving full compensation after being wrongly convicted during the Post Office scandal. Kalia’s conviction, which stemmed from faulty Horizon IT software, was overturned in 2021, but he did not live to see the justice he sought.

Kalia managed a post office for 11 years before being accused of theft, a charge that led to his imprisonment for six months. He was advised to plead guilty, a decision that haunted him for 15 years as he kept his conviction secret even from those closest to him.

Between 1999 and 2015, over 700 post office branch managers were wrongly convicted of fraud and theft due to the malfunctioning Horizon software developed by Fujitsu. This scandal has resulted in a nearly £1.5 billion redress bill for the victims, yet MPs have criticized Fujitsu for not contributing to this compensation fund.

Kalia’s death has intensified the anger surrounding the slow pace of justice for victims of the Post Office scandal. Tim Brentnall, a friend of Kalia, expressed his sorrow, stating, “I think of his family now who have to carry on this fight.” He described Kalia as “a really kind and wonderful man,” underscoring the personal toll of this injustice.

The ongoing fallout from the Post Office scandal continues to raise questions about accountability and the need for reform in the justice system. As the fight for compensation and recognition of the victims persists, observers are left wondering how long it will take for full justice to be served.
