The wider picture

Ashok Kharat, a self-styled numerologist and godman, has been arrested by the Nashik Crime Branch on serious allegations of serial sexual exploitation, drugging, and black magic. Kharat, who previously worked in the Merchant Navy, gained prominence as a spiritual guide and built connections with local leaders and officials, which has now drawn significant attention to his case.

The allegations against Kharat came to light after a 35-year-old woman reported systemic abuse that began in November 2022 and continued until 2025. According to the police complaint, Kharat allegedly used intoxicants mixed in food and water to drug women before sexually assaulting them. He has been booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for rape, criminal intimidation, and sexual harassment, as well as under the Maharashtra Human Sacrifice and Other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, 2013.

During a raid on Kharat’s office, authorities seized a pen drive containing 58 obscene video clips, further complicating his legal situation. The Maharashtra government has responded to the gravity of the allegations by forming a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to thoroughly investigate the claims against Kharat.

Kharat’s arrest has sparked a political controversy in Maharashtra, particularly due to his connections with various politicians and celebrities. Notably, photos and videos have surfaced showing political leaders in Kharat’s company, raising concerns about potential political patronage. His influence reportedly peaked in November 2022 when then-Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited his temple, a visit that has now come under scrutiny.

In the wake of Kharat’s arrest, reactions from political figures have varied. Sanjay Raut remarked, “Maharashtra’s Epstein file has been opened,” highlighting the seriousness of the situation. Meanwhile, Rupali Chakankar stated, “I have no knowledge about Kharat’s personal life or the allegations made against him,” indicating a potential distancing from the controversy.

Yogesh Kadam, another political figure, assured the public that the investigation would be impartial, stating, “The investigation will be impartial. Anyone found involved will face action.” This statement reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the allegations seriously and ensuring accountability.

Kharat has been remanded to police custody until March 24, 2026, as the investigation continues. Observers are closely monitoring the developments, particularly given the high-profile nature of the case and its implications for the political landscape in Maharashtra. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the extent of Kharat’s connections with other influential figures, but the unfolding situation is likely to have significant repercussions.
