Shaheed Diwas is observed every year on 23 March in India to honour the sacrifices of young revolutionaries who fought against British rule. This year, Shaheed Diwas 2026 marks the martyrdom anniversary of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru, who were executed on this date in 1931.

The theme for Shaheed Diwas 2026 is ‘Mera Bharat Meri Zimmedari’, which translates to ‘My India, My Responsibility’. This theme emphasizes the importance of remembering the sacrifices made by these martyrs and encourages the youth to engage with India’s history.

On Shaheed Diwas 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the martyrs, stating, “Today, we bow in reverence to the brave sons of Bharat Mata. Their martyrdom for the nation remains etched in our collective memory.” His remarks reflect the ongoing significance of these figures in India’s struggle for independence.

Shaheed Diwas is also known as Martyrs’ Day in India and is linked to the execution of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev, who were hanged by the British in Lahore jail. The trio was involved in the assassination of British officer John Saunders in 1928, an act carried out to avenge the death of Lala Lajpat Rai.

The day is marked through nationwide programmes and activities designed to engage youth and honour the legacy of martyrs. Simple ceremonies across India include tribute ceremonies at memorials and school programmes aimed at educating young people about the sacrifices made for freedom.

Bhagat Singh was executed at the age of 23, Sukhdev at 23, and Rajguru at 22, highlighting the youthfulness of these revolutionaries and their commitment to the cause of independence. Shaheed Diwas continues to inspire millions of Indians and remains an important part of India’s history.
