shroud of turin — IN news

A recent analysis of the Shroud of Turin has revealed that approximately 40% of the DNA present on the cloth is linked to Indian ancestry. This finding, announced by Dr. Gianni Barcaccia from the University of Padua, suggests that the Shroud may have had extensive exposure in the Mediterranean region and raises questions about its historical journey.

The Shroud, a 4.4-meter-long linen cloth, is believed to have passed through the Middle East before arriving in its current location at the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Turin, Italy. Historical records indicate that the Shroud first appeared in 14th-century France, around 1354.

Dr. Barcaccia noted, “The DNA traces found on the Shroud of Turin suggest the potentially extensive exposure of the cloth in the Mediterranean region and the possibility that the yarn was produced in India.” This analysis has led to speculation about the Shroud’s origins, particularly the claim that it may have been imported by the Romans from regions near the Indus Valley.

In addition to Indian DNA, the analysis revealed traces from domestic animals, wild animals, and plants, indicating the Shroud has been handled by multiple individuals over time. This complicates the identification of the original DNA of the cloth, as stated in the findings.

Details remain unconfirmed, as the study has not yet undergone peer review, leaving its conclusions open to further scrutiny. The exact origins of the Shroud and its historical journey remain debated among scholars.

While the presence of approximately 38.7% of Indian ethnic lineages could result from historical interactions, the claim of Indian descent does not definitively prove that the Shroud was made in India. The ongoing analysis continues to shed light on this enigmatic artifact, which has long been a subject of fascination and debate.
