Glenn Phillips shines despite New Zealand’s loss

“I think the way they played the over, Abishek I thought played that very smart,” said New Zealand’s captain Santner, reflecting on the T20 World Cup 2026 final where his team faced India at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

In a high-scoring match, India set a formidable target of 255 runs, ultimately leading to New Zealand’s fifth consecutive loss in an ICC white-ball event final. Despite the defeat, Phillips’ performance stood out as he was the only right-arm spinner in New Zealand’s lineup.

Phillips bowled just one over in the final, conceding only five runs, showcasing his ability to contain runs under pressure. However, his bowling contributions were overshadowed by the batting prowess of the Indian team.

Earlier in the tournament, Phillips had made headlines with a remarkable innings against Canada, scoring 76 runs off just 36 balls. His explosive performance included four boundaries and six sixes, further solidifying his reputation as a key player for New Zealand.

With a total of 107 sixes in T20 format, Phillips has now become New Zealand’s joint second-highest six-hitter, sharing the honor with Colin Munro. This achievement places him just behind Martin Guptill, who holds the record with 173 sixes in T20 internationals.

Phillips’ ability to perform under pressure was evident throughout the tournament, and his contributions were crucial in several matches leading up to the final. Santner noted, “If Sanju got out, definitely would have been another option for GP to bowl to the two left-handers,” indicating the strategic considerations in the match.

Despite the loss, Phillips’ performance against Canada and his overall contributions in the tournament reflect his potential and importance to the New Zealand team moving forward.

As New Zealand looks to rebuild and learn from this experience, fans will be eager to see how Phillips and his teammates respond in future competitions.
