Christian Horner’s Future in Formula 1

Christian Horner, the former team principal of Red Bull Racing, is currently a free agent and exploring opportunities to return to Formula 1. With his extensive experience in the sport, Horner’s potential moves to either Ferrari or Alpine have become a topic of significant interest among fans and analysts alike.

Ferrari’s Recent Performance

Ferrari finished second in the Constructors’ Championship in 2024 under the leadership of Fred Vasseur. However, the team’s performance took a downturn in 2025, attributed to strategic decision-making issues and the uncompetitiveness of their SF-25 car. This decline has led to speculation about whether Horner could be the right person to help turn around Ferrari’s fortunes.

Expert Opinions on Horner’s Impact

Juan Pablo Montoya, a former F1 driver, believes that while Horner could indeed assist Ferrari in rebuilding, it would require a significant commitment. “Honestly, yes. But Ferrari would have to understand it would be sh*t for two years and that this is a four year programme at least and they would have to be patient,” Montoya stated, highlighting the challenges ahead.

Alpine as a Likely Destination

On the other hand, Alpine is considered the most likely destination for Horner in 2026. Reports indicate that he is currently negotiating to acquire a minority stake in the team. This move could provide him with a platform to influence the team’s direction more directly, especially after Alpine’s disappointing performance, finishing last in the constructors’ championship in 2025.

Stake Acquisition and Competition

Otro Capital is reportedly looking to sell its 24% stake in Alpine, valued at approximately US$588 million. This stake was initially acquired for 200 million euros, equivalent to about 233 million USD. Interestingly, Toto Wolff, the team principal of Mercedes, is also interested in acquiring a minority stake in Alpine, adding another layer of competition in the negotiations.

Wolff’s Changing Role

Wolff’s interest in Alpine comes at a time when he is no longer a person with significant control at Mercedes after selling part of his stake, which reportedly netted him around 300 million USD. This shift in his position could influence his ability to invest in Alpine and compete with Horner for a stake in the team.

Renault’s Control Over Alpine

Despite the interest from Horner and Wolff, it is essential to note that the Renault Group retains majority control over Alpine. The team has been supplied with engines and gearboxes from Mercedes since shutting down its Renault works engine programme, which has further complicated its competitive standing in the sport.

What Lies Ahead

As negotiations continue, observers are left wondering how successful Horner would be in turning around Ferrari’s fortunes if he were to join. Additionally, the outcome of the discussions between Horner, Wolff, and Alpine remains uncertain. Details remain unconfirmed, leaving fans and analysts alike eager for further developments in this unfolding story.
