Christian Horner’s Future in Formula 1

Christian Horner, the former team principal of Red Bull Racing, is currently a free agent and is exploring a return to Formula 1. With the 2026 season approaching, speculation is mounting regarding his potential moves to either Ferrari or Alpine, two teams with contrasting fortunes in recent years.

Ferrari, which finished second in the Constructors’ Championship in 2024 under Fred Vasseur, has faced challenges in maintaining its competitive edge. The team’s performance declined in 2025, attributed to strategic decision-making issues and the uncompetitiveness of the SF-25. Observers note that if Horner were to join Ferrari, it would require a significant rebuilding effort. Juan Pablo Montoya, a former F1 driver, stated, “Honestly, yes. But Ferrari would have to understand it would be sh*t for two years and that this is a four year programme at least and they would have to be patient.”

On the other hand, Alpine is seen as the more likely destination for Horner in 2026. The team finished last in the constructors’ championship in 2025 and is in need of strong leadership to turn its fortunes around. Reports indicate that Horner is negotiating to acquire a minority stake in Alpine, which could provide him with a unique opportunity to influence the team’s direction. Montoya remarked, “Alpine would be the best choice,” highlighting the potential for Horner to make a significant impact there.

Alpine’s current ownership situation adds another layer to the equation. Otro Capital is reportedly looking to sell its 24% stake in Alpine, valued at around US$588 million. This stake was originally purchased for 200 million euros, equivalent to 233 million USD. Toto Wolff, the team principal of Mercedes, is also interested in acquiring a minority stake in Alpine, further complicating the landscape. Wolff has recently sold part of his stake in Mercedes for 300 million USD, diminishing his control within the team.

Renault Group retains majority control of Alpine, and the team has been supplied with engines and gearboxes from Mercedes since shutting down its Renault works engine programme. This relationship could influence Horner’s decision-making as he evaluates his options. The proximity of the Red Bull base, just 20 minutes away from Alpine, may also play a role in his considerations.

Horner’s extensive experience as team principal at Red Bull for over 20 years has equipped him with the skills necessary to lead a team back to competitiveness. However, the uncertainties surrounding his potential impact on Ferrari’s fortunes remain. It is unclear how successful Horner would be in turning around Ferrari’s fortunes if he were to join.

As negotiations unfold, the outcome between Horner, Wolff, and Alpine remains uncertain. The team is regularly approached and contacted by multiple parties and potential investors, indicating a dynamic and competitive environment for leadership changes. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the final decisions and the implications for the teams involved.
