What the data shows

What does the rise of artificial intelligence in journalism mean for the industry and the workforce? As AI technology continues to evolve, it is becoming a significant tool for news organizations, with about 9 percent of major newspapers currently utilizing AI to produce news content. This integration raises questions about the future of journalism and the potential displacement of jobs in the sector.

Experts suggest that smaller publications may be leveraging AI more extensively than their larger counterparts. AI technologies are capable of performing various tasks, such as transcribing audio interviews, creating timelines, scanning data, and summarizing lengthy documents. These capabilities allow journalists to focus more on the creative and investigative aspects of their work, as noted by Boriana Treadwell, who stated, “I actually think that when used responsibly and ethically AI is extremely useful to journalists.”

Several news organizations, including The Cleveland Plain Dealer, have begun using generative AI to draft news stories, indicating a shift in how news is produced. Karin Wilkins highlighted this transformation, stating, “Artificial intelligence is transforming our production and reception of news, accelerating the pace of distribution, amplifying the pronouncements of sensational content, and accentuating the potential for access.” This shift not only changes the workflow for journalists but also alters the relationship between news producers and consumers.

However, the rise of AI in journalism is not without its challenges. The technology is expected to displace approximately 92 million jobs globally by the end of this decade, according to recent estimates. Yet, it is also projected that 170 million new roles will emerge, resulting in a net gain of 78 million jobs worldwide. This duality presents a complex landscape for the workforce, particularly in sectors heavily influenced by technology.

In India, the technology industry is projected to reach a value of $315 billion this fiscal year, showcasing the rapid growth and demand for tech-related roles. This growth is further evidenced by a 28 percent year-on-year increase in active developers in the country. However, the Nifty IT index experienced a 20 percent drop in February 2026, highlighting the volatility and uncertainty in the tech job market.

As AI continues to evolve, companies like Cisco are making significant strides in enhancing AI infrastructure. Cisco has expanded its Secure AI Factory in partnership with NVIDIA to deploy AI across entire infrastructures. Chuck Robbins, CEO of Cisco, emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “In partnership with NVIDIA, we’re solving that challenge with an architecture that sets a new standard for performance – making it simpler to deploy, operate, and secure AI infrastructure.”

Despite the advancements, there are still limitations to what AI can achieve in journalism. Marcia Gomez pointed out that while chatbots can assist in drafting and summarizing, they cannot replace the relationship-driven work of reporting, which includes earning trust with sources, digging for facts, and making editorial judgments. This highlights the ongoing need for human journalists even as AI becomes more integrated into the industry.

The journalism world is increasingly integrating AI into its workflows, necessitating training for journalism students. As the landscape continues to change, the future of journalism and the job market remains uncertain, with many questions still unanswered about how these technologies will shape the industry moving forward.
