Rajya Sabha Elections Update: BJP and Congress Secure Seats in Haryana
The two Rajya Sabha seats from Haryana fell vacant as BJP members Kiran Choudhry and Ram Chander Jangra are set to complete their terms on April 9. In the recent elections, Sanjay Bhatia from the BJP and Karamvir Singh Boudh from the Congress were elected to fill these positions.
However, the election process was marred by controversy, as five votes were declared invalid, including four from Congress and one from BJP. This raised concerns regarding the integrity of the voting process.
The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) chose to abstain from voting, which may have influenced the overall results. In the Haryana Assembly, the BJP holds a majority with 48 MLAs, while Congress has 37, INLD has 2, and there are 3 Independents.
In a related development, the Odisha Congress suspended three MLAs for cross-voting during the Rajya Sabha elections, indicating internal strife within the party. The BJP also secured all three Rajya Sabha seats in Odisha, with Independent candidate Dilip Ray winning against the common candidate Datteswar Ray Hota.
The counting process for the Haryana Rajya Sabha elections faced significant delays due to objections raised by both parties. Bhupinder Singh Hooda, a prominent Congress leader, expressed his discontent, stating, “I will not name them, but people have understood, and the public will teach them a lesson.”
Observers note that the BJP’s stronghold in Haryana and Odisha reflects its growing influence in Indian politics. The party’s ability to secure seats despite the controversies suggests a strategic advantage moving forward.
As the political landscape evolves, it remains to be seen how these developments will affect party dynamics and future elections. The ongoing tensions within the Congress party, particularly in Odisha, may have repercussions in upcoming political contests.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full implications of the invalid votes and the abstention by INLD, but analysts are closely monitoring the situation.
