Hardeep Puri’s Daughter Wins Defamation Case Against Online Allegations

“These allegations are entirely false, malicious, and devoid of any factual foundation,” stated Himayani Puri in a recent court case that has drawn significant attention. The Delhi High Court granted her interim relief concerning defamatory posts that falsely linked her to the notorious financier Jeffrey Epstein.

The ruling, delivered on March 17, 2026, by Justice Mini Pushkarna, mandated social media platforms to remove the allegedly defamatory content. The court clarified that this order applies strictly within Indian jurisdiction, emphasizing the need for responsible content management on these platforms.

Himayani Puri, who is the daughter of Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, filed a substantial defamation suit amounting to Rs. 10 crore against various defendants, including journalists and social media platforms. The court found a prima facie case in favor of Puri, indicating that the allegations against her warranted serious legal consideration.

The defamatory posts reportedly began circulating on February 22, 2026, and Puri’s legal team argued that a coordinated online campaign was orchestrated against her, possibly due to her familial connections. “I am a victim of an attack because I am the daughter of a cabinet minister. I suspect political malice,” remarked Himayani Puri’s counsel during the proceedings.

In addition to ordering the removal of content uploaded from Indian IP addresses, the court also directed that URLs and links uploaded from outside India must be blocked from being viewed within the country. However, the issue of whether courts can order a global takedown of online content remains unresolved, as Justice Pushkarna noted, “The question of whether courts can order global takedown of online content is already pending before another Bench.”

Arvind Datar, representing Meta, acknowledged the limitations of the court’s jurisdiction, stating, “We can take down only within India. On global, we have taken a stand that we cannot do it globally and we are contesting the issue.” This highlights the ongoing challenges in regulating online content across borders, particularly in cases involving high-profile individuals.

The court has issued summons to the defendants in the suit, and as the case progresses, it may set important precedents regarding online defamation and the responsibilities of social media platforms.
