England appoints Stephen Fleming as Test head coach; Joe Root returns as captain

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced the appointment of Stephen Fleming as the England Men’s Test Head Coach. Alongside this, Joe Root has been named the team’s captain. Fleming’s tenure is set to commence following the start of the upcoming Rothesay Test Series against Pakistan.

Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim Head Coach during the initial phase of the Pakistan Test Series. This arrangement allows Fleming to spend time with his family in New Zealand after his recent departure from his long-term association with Chennai Super Kings. Fleming is expected to travel to the UK later this summer to begin preparations for the South Africa Test tour.

Fleming’s Extensive Coaching and Playing Career

Stephen Fleming is widely regarded in the world of cricket coaching, having been associated with Chennai Super Kings for 18 years. During his time as coach, he guided CSK to a record five Indian Premier League titles and saw the team reach the final 10 times. His coaching experience also extends to leading Southern Brave to the final of The Hundred men’s competition in 2023, and coaching CSK’s affiliate teams in South Africa and the USA, as well as the Melbourne Stars.

As a player, Fleming was New Zealand’s longest-serving Test captain, leading in 80 Tests and securing 28 wins. He also played for Middlesex, Yorkshire, and Nottinghamshire, where he captained Notts to a County Championship title in 2005. He made 111 appearances in his playing career, making him New Zealand’s second-most capped Test cricketer of all time.

Fleming expressed his excitement about the new role, stating it is one of the most prestigious coaching positions in world cricket. He looks forward to working with the players and building on the progress made by Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes. His ambition includes winning and ensuring the team’s long-term success, focusing on developing young talent.

Root’s Return to Captaincy

Joe Root will return as England Men’s Test captain, a role he previously held from 2017-2022. He holds the record for captaining England Men in the most Test matches, with 65 Tests, and achieving the most wins, with 27 victories. Root recently took on the captaincy on an interim basis at the Kia Oval during the Rothesay Test Series against New Zealand earlier this summer.

Root described his reappointment as a great honour and privilege, acknowledging the challenges and rewards of the Test captaincy. He is eager to lead the next generation of players and is particularly motivated by the opportunity to work alongside Stephen Fleming, whom he regards as an exceptional leader with extensive knowledge of the game. Fleming also expressed enthusiasm for working with Root, describing him as a generational talent.

The selection panel for the ECB unanimously agreed on Fleming’s appointment after a rigorous process involving numerous high-quality candidates. Rob Key, Managing Director of England Men’s Cricket, highlighted Fleming’s respected status in cricket and his ability to guide a talented team. Richard Gould, ECB Chief Executive Officer, also praised Fleming’s proven track record in building winning environments.

Fleming also looks forward to working with Harry Brook, aiming to help him develop his talent and leadership. Fleming’s appointment follows Brendon McCullum’s departure from the coaching role after a series defeat to the Black Caps in June. Ben Stokes’ shock retirement during the final Test of the series against New Zealand also played a role in Root’s return to captaincy. England currently sits in seventh place in the World Test Championship standings.

Fleming’s first spell as coach will be in preparation for the South Africa Test tour.
