Fleming to lead England Test side

Stephen Fleming, the former New Zealand captain, is anticipated to be named as England‘s Test coach. This appointment follows a series of interviews conducted by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) over the past two weeks. Fleming, who is 53 years old, would take over from Brendon McCullum, who was dismissed earlier this month from the Test coaching role but continues to manage England‘s white-ball teams.

McCullum‘s departure came after a period of mixed results for the England Test side. While his initial year saw England win 10 out of 12 Tests, the team’s performance since then has seen them win 17 and lose 18 of 37 Tests. The decision to remove McCullum was made after the ECB reflected on the men’s team’s situation, which included a 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia and a 2-1 home series loss to New Zealand.

The selection of Fleming comes after other candidates, including former England coach Andy Flower, ruled themselves out. Flower had been an early frontrunner for the position. Other names linked to the role included former Australian head coach Justin Langer, who stated he had not been contacted by the ECB, as well as former England batter Jonathan Trott, Richard Dawson, Gareth Batty, and Australians Tom Moody, Darren Lehmann, and Ryan Campbell.

Extensive Coaching Experience

Despite not having previously served as a head coach for a national team, Fleming brings a wealth of experience from the franchise circuit. Since retiring as a player in 2009, he has been a prominent figure in T20 leagues globally. He notably held a 17-year tenure as head coach of the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

During his time with CSK, Fleming led the team to five IPL titles from nine finals and secured two Champions League T20 crowns. His coaching roles extended to sister teams, including Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket and Joburg Super Kings in SA20. Additionally, he coached Southern Brave in The Hundred for two seasons, leaving in 2024.

Fleming‘s connection with CSK ended this month, an announcement made shortly after McCullum‘s sacking. His departure from CSK followed the team finishing eighth out of 10 teams in this year’s IPL, building on a last-place finish in 2025.

As a player, Fleming made 111 appearances for New Zealand in Test cricket, scoring over 7,000 runs at an average of 40.06. He remains the Black Caps‘ most successful captain, achieving 28 wins from 80 matches. His experience in English cricket also includes stints with Middlesex, Yorkshire, and Nottinghamshire, where he captained them to the County Championship title in 2005.

Transition and Future Plans

It is currently uncertain whether Fleming will be in position to lead England for the upcoming three-Test series against Pakistan, which is scheduled to begin at Headingley on 19 August. There is a possibility that an interim coach, likely assistant coach Marcus Trescothick, could oversee this series. Former skipper Joe Root is also expected to captain the side for that series.

Fleming is expected to be fully in place for the tour of South Africa, which is set to commence in December. His appointment will involve collaboration with Rob Key, the director of men’s cricket, and national selector Marcus North, particularly in the selection of a new Test captain following Ben Stokes‘ retirement from international cricket in June.

Harry Brook, the current England vice-captain and white-ball teams leader, had received backing from Stokes to be his successor. However, Brook was overlooked for the role earlier in the summer, with a nightclub incident last winter cited as a contributing factor. The relationship between Fleming and McCullum, who are described as friends and business associates, is seen as crucial for the success of the split-coach model.
