Bhopal: Shashank Singh denies assault allegations after FIR, claims cook took private videos

Punjab Kings cricketer Shashank Singh and his father, Shailesh Singh, a retired IPS officer, along with their driver, are currently under police investigation in Bhopal following an FIR registered against them. The complaint was filed by their former domestic cook, Vipendra Singh Tomar, who alleges assault, verbal abuse, and wrongful confinement. The Ratibad Police in Bhopal have registered a case under Sections 296(B), 115(2), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and an investigation is underway.

Tomar, a resident of Rewa district in Madhya Pradesh, claims he began working at the Singh family’s residence in Neelbad on June 25. He stated he was promised a monthly salary of Rs 15,000, along with food and accommodation. According to Tomar’s complaint, he was later informed of shortcomings in his work, and his mobile phone was confiscated. The situation reportedly escalated on June 28 when he requested his phone back after preparing breakfast, a request that was refused by Shailesh Singh.

Tomar further alleged that Shailesh Singh, Shashank Singh, and their driver subsequently entered his room, abused him, and assaulted him with their hands and fists before forcing him out of the house. He also claimed that Rs 1,000 was transferred from his mobile phone, with the accused stating the amount was deducted for food and accommodation expenses. A medical examination reportedly found visible injuries on Tomar, leading to the registration of the FIR.

Shashank Singh’s Counter-Allegations

Shashank Singh has publicly denied the allegations, stating that neither he nor his family assaulted Tomar or held him against his will. He told ANI, “No, we didn’t hold him hostage.” Shashank explained that Tomar, who claimed to be a cook, allegedly did not know how to cook and was instead taking videos and photos, including in private areas of the house. Shashank expressed suspicion that Tomar’s intention might have been to steal, though he noted that nothing had been found stolen so far.

Regarding the confiscation of Tomar’s phone, Shashank clarified that it contained videos and photos of the house, which his mother had asked him to delete due to their private nature. He also claimed that the police have not yet contacted him regarding the matter. Shashank mentioned that his sister had suggested calling the police when they discovered Tomar taking photos and videos, but they decided to let him go after he pleaded.

Shashank further rejected the allegations of assault and abuse, stating that anyone familiar with him would know that physical altercations are out of the question for him. He added that he hesitates to use abusive language and therefore could not commit such acts. He questioned the timeline of events, noting that Tomar arrived on the evening of June 25 and left on the morning of June 28, suggesting this period was too short for a hostage situation.

The cricketer also alleged that Tomar misrepresented his cooking abilities. He stated that Tomar initially claimed to know how to cook various dishes but later admitted he did not. Shashank also mentioned that Tomar had been recommended by an acquaintance of his father and had requested an advance payment of Rs 20,000 shortly after arriving. The family had reportedly asked him to work for a few days before discussing compensation and deciding on the arrangement.

Ongoing Investigation

The police have initiated an investigation into the allegations from both sides. Tomar had initially claimed that police were reluctant to register his complaint but proceeded after a medical examination. The FIR against Shashank Singh, his father, and their driver was registered following Tomar’s complaint alleging assault, verbal abuse, and wrongful confinement, and the matter remains under police investigation.
