India’s T20I vice-captain, Tilak Varma, has addressed recent criticism regarding his strike rate, asserting that his batting approach is dictated by team requirements and match situations rather than individual statistics. His comments come as India prepares for an upcoming T20I series against Zimbabwe, with the team looking to regain winning momentum after recent series defeats.

India, the reigning T20 World Cup champions, have not secured a win in their last seven T20I matches. This includes two losses against Ireland and a 4-0 series sweep by England in a five-match T20I series. Varma acknowledged the learning curve from these recent series, emphasising the squad’s focus on executing plans and playing their best cricket in the upcoming matches.

The team has also brought in new talent for the Zimbabwe series, including pacers Yash Thakur and Ashok Sharma, along with opener Prabhsimran Singh. These additions aim to bolster the squad as they seek to adapt quickly to the conditions and perform effectively.

Varma’s batting philosophy

Varma, a left-handed batter, explained that his strike rate, which was 131.85 across seven T20Is against Ireland and England, was a result of adapting to different batting positions and overseas conditions. He clarified that while he is capable of attacking from the first ball, his decisions are based on the team’s needs during a game.

He highlighted instances during the Ireland and England tours where India frequently lost four or five wickets within the powerplay or the first 10 overs. In such scenarios, Varma stated that his role often shifted to rebuilding the innings rather than aggressively chasing a high strike rate. He believes that playing for the country comes with responsibilities, and his approach reflects the team’s strategic requirements.

Varma scored 178 runs across the seven T20 matches during the tours, including two half-centuries: 55 against Ireland and 53 against England in the final T20I. Despite these performances, questions were raised about his approach in the middle overs. He reiterated that as vice-captain, he is entrusted with specific responsibilities by the team management and prioritises executing those plans over individual statistics.

The batter also pointed out that the conditions in Ireland were distinct, and facing a strong team like England in different conditions presented unique challenges. He stressed the importance of maintaining a positive atmosphere within the team and learning from past experiences to perform better in the future.

India has recent experience touring Zimbabwe, but Varma cautioned against underestimating the hosts. He recalled that Zimbabwe had secured a victory in the opening match of their previous bilateral contest, defending a target of 115 runs. Although India recovered to win four out of the remaining four games in that series, the initial loss serves as a reminder of Zimbabwe’s competitive nature.

The batting group for the upcoming series remains largely consistent with those from recent tours. However, Varma anticipates subtle changes in the playing surface, which will require the visitors to adapt quickly. The series between India and Zimbabwe is scheduled to commence on Thursday, July 23, in Harare.
