Overview of the 2026 Winter Paralympics
The 2026 Winter Paralympic Games kick off on March 6, 2026, in Italy, marking the 14th edition of the Winter Paralympics and its 50th anniversary. Over 600 athletes from 56 countries are expected to participate in this significant event.
Competitors will vie for medals in 79 events across six sports: para Alpine skiing, para biathlon, para cross-country skiing, para ice hockey, para snowboard, and wheelchair curling. This edition will also feature mixed doubles in wheelchair curling for the first time.
Team USA and Notable Athletes
The United States will be represented by 68 athletes, the second-largest contingent after China. The U.S. sled hockey team is aiming for a record fifth consecutive gold medal, while Oksana Masters, the most decorated U.S. Paralympian, is looking to add to her medal count.
As Brenna Huckaby stated, “Visibility is huge,” emphasizing the importance of the event for para sports. Giacomo Bertagnolli added, “It will be a big stage for me and for the whole Paralympic world because we are finally in Italy and in Europe.”
Event Details and Controversies
The opening ceremony will take place in Verona, with broadcasts scheduled at 2 p.m. ET and 8 p.m. ET. The closing ceremony is set for March 15, 2026. The Games will be held across multiple venues in northern Italy, including Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.
However, the International Paralympic Committee’s decision to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under their own flags has sparked controversy. Observers are also concerned about the potential impact of geopolitical tensions on the participation of certain countries.

As the event approaches, the excitement builds among athletes and fans alike. The Games are expected to deliver “world-class sport [that is] highly competitive,” according to IPC President Andrew Parsons. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact number of medals expected for Team USA.
