The Boston Celtics have adopted an unprecedented reliance on 3-point shooting, leading to a commanding 3-1 series lead against the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA playoffs. This strategy has proven effective, especially in light of Joel Embiid’s injury, which sidelined him for the first three games.

Before this series, expectations favored a competitive matchup. The Sixers had previously eliminated the Celtics in Game 7 during past playoffs. However, the absence of Embiid has shifted dynamics significantly.

The Celtics have shot an impressive 55.9% of their attempts from beyond the arc. This marks the second-highest rate for any team in playoff history. They outscored the Sixers by an average of 21.8 points per game from three-point range throughout the series.

In contrast, the Sixers averaged 25 transition points per game during their regular-season meetings with the Celtics. In this series, however, that number has dropped to just 14.7. This decline reflects their struggle to adapt without Embiid’s presence on the court.

The Celtics’ shooting efficiency has varied throughout the series. They shot 39.6% from beyond the arc in their two wins but only 26% in Game 2. The Sixers managed to shoot 49% from three-point range in that game but fell to just 28% in their two losses.

The Celtics have maintained control with fewer turnovers, committing just 12.3 turnovers per 100 possessions—one of the lowest rates in this playoff round. This efficiency has allowed them to capitalize on scoring opportunities.

Celtics forward Jayson Tatum noted, “The Celtics are living by the 3.” Analysts emphasize that this series is indeed a make-or-miss scenario, highlighting how crucial outside shooting is for both teams’ success.
