Gabriel bortoleto makes F1 debut with Audi at Australian Grand Prix

The former Sauber team underwent a transition after being purchased by Audi. This marked a significant change in the team’s direction and development, particularly with the introduction of a new power unit developed from scratch at Audi’s Neuburg facility.

Gabriel Bortoleto made his F1 debut with the team in 2025 and has since expressed pride in the progress made since Audi’s takeover, highlighting the team’s efforts behind the scenes.

Breaking Development

On March 7, 2026, at the Australian Grand Prix, Bortoleto qualified 10th in Q1 and Q2, showcasing his potential in the new setup. However, a drive issue prevented him from participating in Q3, which was a disappointment for both him and the team.

Nico Hülkenberg, Bortoleto’s teammate, qualified just behind him in 11th place. Bortoleto’s qualifying time in Q2 was 1:20.221, while Hülkenberg clocked in at 1:20.303.

After the qualifying session, Bortoleto stated, “I’m happy with what the team has achieved. From now on, we keep working.” He also expressed regret over missing Q3, saying, “It’s a real shame not to be able to take part in Q3. It would have been a just reward for the team’s hard work.”

Jonathan Wheatley, a key figure in the team, remarked, “Qualifying was extremely encouraging for the team, and seeing Gabi reach Q3 in Audi’s first race is a special moment for everyone involved.” Bortoleto further praised the team’s behind-the-scenes efforts, noting, “I’ve been impressed by the amount of work these people have been doing behind the scenes that maybe a lot of you guys don’t know because it’s not shown.”
