Nagelsmann’s Departure and Germany’s World Cup Performance

Julian Nagelsmann has resigned as the head coach of the Germany men’s national football team, following the team’s early exit from the World Cup. The German Football Association (DFB) confirmed his resignation on Friday, just days after Germany was eliminated from the tournament. Nagelsmann had requested to be relieved of his duties on Thursday.

The 38-year-old coach, who took charge in September 2023, initially expressed a desire to remain in his position, stating after the defeat, “I’m not someone who runs away.” However, after further consideration and discussions with trusted individuals, he decided that the team deserved a fresh start after the disappointing outcome. His decision was accepted by the DFB, which immediately terminated his contract.

Germany, four-time World Cup winners, were knocked out in the last 32 after a penalty shootout loss to Paraguay. This marks the third consecutive World Cup campaign where Germany failed to advance past the round of 16, following group stage exits in 2018 and 2022 under previous coaches. The team’s last World Cup knockout victory was in 2014 when they were crowned champions.

DFB President Bernd Neuendorf acknowledged that Germany’s performance at the World Cup did not meet their standards. He stated that discussions would take place to understand why the team could not display its full potential and failed to meet the expectations of fans across Germany. Sporting director Rudi Voller respected Nagelsmann’s decision, recognizing that he was taking responsibility for the team’s performance.

Nagelsmann’s tenure included leading Germany to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals as hosts, where they were defeated by eventual winners Spain in extra time. During the recent World Cup, some of his tactical decisions, such as playing Joshua Kimmich as a right-back instead of his usual midfield role and recalling 40-year-old goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, drew scrutiny.

DFB Eyes Jurgen Klopp as Successor

Following Nagelsmann’s resignation, the DFB has initiated talks with Jurgen Klopp regarding the vacant head coach position for the men’s national team. The DFB stated that Klopp has already indicated his general willingness to consider taking on the role. This development comes after Klopp had been repeatedly linked with the national team job, even while working as a pundit for German television during the recent World Cup.

Klopp, 59, stepped down from his role as manager of Liverpool in 2024 after a successful nine-year spell, during which he led the club to seven major honours, including the Premier League title in 2019-20 and the Champions League in 2019. He then took on the role of head of global football for Red Bull in January 2025. Despite previously dismissing rumors of a return to club management, such as with Real Madrid in March, his recent availability and expressed interest in the national team role have made him a leading candidate.

When Klopp announced his departure from Liverpool in January 2024, he cited a need for a break due to a lack of energy. However, having spent time away from the intense demands of club management, it appears the former Borussia Dortmund and Mainz boss is now open to returning to coaching, particularly in the international arena. The DFB’s pursuit of Klopp suggests a significant move to revitalize the national team after a series of disappointing tournament performances.

The search for a new coach is critical as Germany looks to rebuild and prepare for future competitions. The team’s recent struggles in major tournaments have highlighted the need for a fresh approach and leadership. The DFB’s immediate focus is on engaging in discussions with Klopp to explore the possibility of him taking over the national team.
