Glasgow Commonwealth Games: Jadumani Singh advances, Preeti Panwar one win from medal

Indian boxer Jadumani Singh Mandengbam secured his place in the men’s 55kg quarter-finals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, following a dominant 5-0 victory over Sumama Rehman of Pakistan. This win keeps India’s medal aspirations alive in the category.

The boxer from Manipur showcased control throughout his Round of 16 bout on Sunday, overcoming his opponent by unanimous decision. This victory builds on Jadumani’s strong start at the Games, having previously defeated Aaron Cullen of Scotland in the Round of 32.

Jadumani’s path to the quarter-finals

Jadumani entered the pre-quarter-final with confidence after a one-sided performance against Cullen. Rehman, in contrast, had received a bye in the preliminary round. Jadumani, who earned a silver medal in the 50kg division at last year’s World Boxing Cup Finals in Noida before moving to the 55kg category this season, demonstrated his speed and composure.

The opening round of the contest was closely fought, with both fighters exchanging punches. Rehman utilized his height and reach advantage, while Jadumani employed quick footwork, sharp movement, and fast combinations. The judges narrowly favored the Indian boxer after the first round.

The intensity increased in the second round, where Jadumani established greater control. He scored a knockdown on Rehman, which proved to be a decisive moment, shifting the momentum in his favor. Jadumani maintained this advantage through the remainder of the fight, securing a unanimous verdict from all five judges after three rounds.

This win propels Jadumani into a quarter-final clash against England‘s Ellis Trowbridge on Tuesday. A victory in this bout would guarantee him a place in the medal rounds, as Commonwealth Games boxing rules award bronze medals to both losing semi-finalists.

Panwar and other Indian boxers advance

In other boxing news, Preeti Panwar, an Asian Games bronze medallist, advanced to the women’s 54kg quarter-finals. She achieved a dominant win over Deborah Mtenje of Malawi via a Referee Stop Contest (RSC) decision in the second round on Sunday.

The boxer from Bhiwani, who also won a gold at the New Delhi World Cup last year, controlled her Round of 16 contest. Mtenje received two standing counts, one in each round, leading the referee to stop the bout with 47 seconds remaining in the second round. Preeti had received the unanimous nod of all five judges in the first round.

This victory places Preeti one win away from securing her first Commonwealth Games medal. She is scheduled to face Nicole Clyde of Northern Ireland in the quarter-finals on Tuesday. Clyde previously secured a unanimous decision victory against Ghana‘s Nancy Bamfo in her pre-quarter-final bout.

Preeti noted that this was her first bout in the Games and she used the first round to assess the ring environment before becoming more aggressive in the second. She expressed optimism about her draw and her chances for a medal.

India’s boxing contingent in Glasgow consists of 14 members, with seven male and seven female boxers. Lovlina Borgohain has already secured India’s first confirmed boxing medal of the Games. Competing in the women’s 75kg division, Lovlina received a direct bye into the semi-finals, automatically guaranteeing at least a bronze medal.

Lovlina is set to compete against Tarona Khanum Badi Pasoni Taafaki of Tuvalu in the semi-finals on July 31, with a spot in the gold medal bout at stake. Additionally, Sachin Siwach, a medal hopeful in the men’s 60kg division, progressed from the Round of 32 after a 4-1 split decision victory over Canada‘s Keoma Al-Ahmadieh. Siwach will face England‘s William Hewitt on Monday for a place in the quarter-finals.

With Jadumani in the last eight, Lovlina guaranteed a medal, and Siwach continuing his campaign, India’s boxing team remains strong contenders across multiple weight categories as the competition progresses in Glasgow.
