India experienced a successful day at the Commonwealth Games 2026, adding three more medals to its tally, which now stands at 15 medals. This includes three gold, nine silver, and three bronze medals, placing the country eighth in the overall standings. Among the notable performances, long jumper Murali Sreeshankar secured his second consecutive silver medal, while para athlete Dilip Mahadu Gavit claimed a gold medal with a new Games record.
Sreeshankar’s Historic Long Jump Performance
Murali Sreeshankar continued his strong showing at the Commonwealth Games by earning a silver medal in the men’s long jump. His best effort measured 8.09m. This achievement marks his second consecutive silver medal in the event, making him the first Indian to win back-to-back medals in the long jump at the Commonwealth Games. He had previously secured a silver medal at the 2022 Games in Birmingham.
During the competition, Sreeshankar began with an opening jump of 8.03m, initially placing him third. He was behind Scotland’s Stephen McKenzie and Jamaica’s Tajay Gayle, both of whom had jumped 8.08m. Sreeshankar briefly took the lead with his 8.09m jump. However, Gayle responded with a winning jump of 8.15m to secure the gold medal. McKenzie ultimately took the bronze with an 8.08m effort, while India’s Lokesh Sathyanathan finished fifth with a best jump of 7.97m.

The 27-year-old athlete’s performance is particularly significant given his comeback from a career-threatening injury. In April 2024, he suffered a ruptured patellar tendon, which required surgery and caused him to miss a potential Olympic appearance. Despite these challenges, Sreeshankar has shown consistent form, regularly jumping over 8m this year, including a season’s best of 8.38m at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar.
Para Athletics and Boxing Success
India also made history in para athletics with a one-two finish in the men’s 100m T47 event, which is for athletes with upper-limb impairments. Dilip Mahadu Gavit secured the gold medal, setting a new Games record with a time of 10.71 seconds. His compatriot, Mohammed Basil Morssinganakathi, finished second, claiming the silver medal with a season-best time of 10.83 seconds.
This gold medal for Gavit marks India’s third at the Games. Earlier, Mirabai Chanu won the gold in the women’s 48kg weightlifting category, and Sharmila Dhankar secured gold in the women’s shot put F57 event.
Indian boxers also had a strong showing, guaranteeing 10 medals by advancing multiple athletes to the semifinals. Six additional boxers reached the semifinals, bringing the total number of guaranteed boxing medals to 10. These athletes include Sakshi Chaudhary (51kg), Arundhati Choudhary (70kg), Sachin Siwach (60kg), Ankush Panghal (80kg), Narender Berwal (+90kg), and world champion Jaismine Lamboria (57kg). They join Lovlina Borgohain (75kg), Priya Ghanghas (60kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg), and Jadumani Singh (55kg), who had previously secured their semifinal spots.
The boxing team’s performance has already surpassed India’s medal haul from the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where they won seven medals. With all 10 boxers reaching the semifinals, India is now assured of at least 10 bronze medals.
Mixed Results in Other Events
On the track, India saw positive results as Yashas Palaksha and Santhosh K Tamilarasan qualified for the men’s 400m hurdles final. Santhosh finished third in Heat 2 with a time of 49.51 seconds, while Yashas placed third in Heat 1 in 49.65 seconds. Both advanced as the two fastest non-automatic qualifiers.
In field events, there were mixed outcomes. Manpreet Singh narrowly missed a medal, finishing fourth in the women’s shot put final with a best throw of 17.49m. However, Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Samardeep Singh Gill qualified for the men’s shot put final. Toor achieved the automatic qualification mark with a throw of 20.14m, after an initial throw of 19.93m. Gill’s best throw was 19.95m, which was sufficient to qualify among the top 12 performers.
National record holder Animesh Kujur also qualified for the men’s 200m semifinals, delivering his season-best performance. The 23-year-old won Heat 4 in 20.46 seconds, finishing seventh overall and securing his place in the last 16.
However, India faced setbacks in weightlifting and swimming. Sanjana did not finish the women’s 77kg weightlifting event. In swimming, both Sajan Prakash and Aneesh S Gowda missed out on qualifying for the men’s 200m freestyle final. Prakash finished 20th overall with a time of 1:51.99, and Aneesh ended 18th with a time of 1:51.64.
