Spain’s triumphant return to Madrid

Spain’s triumphant World Cup champions have arrived back in Madrid following their victory against Argentina in New Jersey. The team touched down at Madrid’s Barajas airport at 2:30 PM local time on Monday. Rodri, the team captain, was seen waving the trophy aloft as he disembarked the plane, still wearing his medal from the previous night’s match.

Hundreds of enthusiastic fans, many dressed in Spain strips and carrying the national flag, gathered at terminal four of the airport, hoping to catch a glimpse of the newly crowned champions. This marked the first of many celebrations planned for the team’s return.

The team’s first official stop after arriving in Madrid is the Zarzuela palace, located northwest of the city. There, the players and staff are scheduled to be received by King Felipe and Queen Letizia at approximately 4:30 PM. Following this royal reception, they are expected to proceed to the Moncloa palace, the official office and residence of the prime minister, for a meeting with Spain’s socialist prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, around 6 PM.

Celebrations across the capital

More than a million people are anticipated to gather in central Madrid on Monday night to welcome the national team home. The victory parade is set to commence with the team traveling into town by bus from Moncloa. The main festivities, which will include musical events, are planned for the Plaza de Cibeles, situated just outside Madrid city hall.

Madrid’s mayor, José Luis Martínez Almeida, informed Radio Nacional de España that the capital is working to ensure the team receives a fitting homecoming. He highlighted the peaceful and joyful atmosphere that prevailed in the city following Spain’s victory, noting the absence of significant incidents despite large crowds.

The mayor also mentioned that musical events at Cibeles are expected to begin around 6 PM, with the parade scheduled to start at 7 PM. He added that these timings are subject to various factors. The focus remains on celebrating and honoring a team that is expected to be remembered for a long time.

Reflecting on the World Cup final

Spain’s victory, their second men’s World Cup win, was secured with a 1-0 scoreline against Argentina. The decisive goal came from Ferran Torres, who calmly scored at the start of the second half of extra time. This triumph denied Lionel Messi a World Cup title in what was likely his final appearance in the tournament.

The final match itself was described as a bizarre and at times strange spectacle for the initial 90 minutes, with Argentina offering little in terms of offensive play until the 117th minute. Post-match events, including a red card for Enzo Fernandez and other flare-ups, further marred the occasion. FIFA is expected to investigate these post-match scenes to determine if additional disciplinary action is warranted against Argentina or its football federation.

The UEFA president reportedly boycotted the World Cup final in protest, citing discontent with FIFA. The Spanish postal service, Correos, has announced the creation of a special stamp to commemorate this achievement. The red stamp will feature the word CAMPEONES and two stars, representing Spain’s two World Cup victories.
