mitchell santner — IN news
In

“Mitchell Santner is yet to report to the Mumbai Indians squad, with his duties as New Zealand skipper only culminated at the end of the third T20I against South Africa on March 20,” stated Mahela Jayawardene, the team’s coach.

After missing the opening match of IPL 2026 against Kolkata Knight Riders due to personal commitments, Santner has now joined the Mumbai Indians squad in Delhi ahead of their match against Delhi Capitals. His arrival is seen as a timely boost for the team, who began their campaign with a six-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders.

In IPL 2025, Santner played 13 matches, taking 10 wickets at an economy rate of 7.92. His consistent performance has made him a valuable asset for the Mumbai Indians, who retained him for IPL 2026 after acquiring him for Rs 2 crore.

During the recent 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup, Santner captained New Zealand to a runners-up finish, scoring 120 runs at a strike rate of 142.85. His leadership and skills will be crucial as the Mumbai Indians aim for their sixth IPL title this season.

“Santner’s arrival provides a timely boost to the Mumbai Indians, who began their campaign with a six-wicket win over the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium,” noted a team spokesperson.

His presence can be crucial on slower surfaces like Delhi, where spin might be the key. Adding Santner gives the team more tactical options, especially in managing the middle overs and controlling the run flow.

As the tournament progresses, the Mumbai Indians will look to leverage Santner’s experience and skill set to enhance their chances of success in IPL 2026.

With the team already showing promise in their opening match, the addition of Santner is expected to further strengthen their lineup as they prepare for the challenges ahead.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding his immediate impact on the upcoming matches, but expectations are high for the seasoned all-rounder.
