By Rohan Mehta / 03.05.2026
Newcastle United ended a five-match losing streak with a crucial 3-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion on May 2, 2023, at St. James’ Park. This win significantly boosted Newcastle’s league position.
Joelinton returned to the starting lineup for Newcastle after serving a suspension. The match saw Danny Welbeck captaining Brighton as they aimed to maintain their strong form.
The first half saw both teams struggle to convert chances. However, Newcastle broke the deadlock early in the second half. Bruno Guimaraes scored the opening goal, giving Newcastle an important lead.
Brighton equalized shortly after through Welbeck, who finished well from inside the box. Yet, Newcastle responded quickly and regained the lead when Harvey Barnes scored in the 75th minute.
In stoppage time, Barnes sealed the victory with another goal. His powerful finish capped off an impressive performance from Newcastle.
This victory marked a significant turnaround for Newcastle, who had lost nine of their previous twelve league matches. They climbed to 13th place in the Premier League standings following this win.
Brighton, on the other hand, slipped to 7th place after suffering their first defeat since March 4. They had been on a strong run of form prior to this match.
Nick Pope, Newcastle’s goalkeeper, showed signs of relief during the match as he faced pressure from Brighton’s attacking players. He managed to keep his team in the game despite some tense moments.
Eddie Howe emphasized the importance of this win for his side. “Howe needed a victory and… his side delivered against in-form Brighton,” an observer noted.
The result is crucial for Newcastle as they seek to stabilize their season and avoid relegation battles. With this win, they aim to build momentum heading into their next fixtures.
