pathirana — IN news
In

Before the recent developments, Matheesha Pathirana was anticipated to play a significant role for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL 2026 season. Acquired for a substantial Rs 18 crore during the auction, he was one of KKR’s top priorities, expected to bolster their bowling lineup.

However, a calf strain has altered those expectations. Pathirana is now expected to miss the early stages of the IPL 2026 season, with his availability pushed back to mid-April after undergoing rehabilitation with Sri Lanka Cricket. This injury comes just ahead of KKR’s season opener against the Mumbai Indians on March 29, 2026.

Shane Watson, KKR’s assistant coach, described the current situation regarding Pathirana’s availability as “a waiting game.” He emphasized the importance of ensuring that Pathirana does not rush back into action, which could exacerbate his injury. Watson stated, “We want Pathirana to be here. We want him to be fit. We certainly would never push him any earlier than he needs to.”

The decision to prioritize Pathirana’s long-term health over immediate participation reflects KKR’s commitment to player welfare. Watson further noted, “The last thing that we want as KKR is him playing the first game and trying to come back too early and breaking as well.” This cautious approach underscores the team’s strategy to integrate Pathirana effectively once he is fit.

KKR is actively coordinating with Sri Lanka Cricket to monitor Pathirana’s rehabilitation progress, hoping for a swift recovery. Watson expressed optimism, saying, “We just hope that sooner rather than later, he’s able to come over here and we can really start the integration process.”

As KKR prepares for the season without one of their key players, the impact of Pathirana’s absence could be significant. The team will need to adapt their strategies and possibly rely on other bowlers to fill the gap left by his injury.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact timeline for Pathirana’s return, but the focus remains on ensuring his fitness for the latter part of the season. The situation continues to evolve as KKR navigates the challenges posed by this injury.
