Qatar Faces Iranian Missile Attack on Key Gas Facility

In a significant escalation of regional tensions, Iranian missile attacks struck Ras Laffan Industrial City in Qatar on March 18, 2026. This facility is crucial as it is the world’s largest LNG production site, accounting for approximately 20% of the global LNG supply.

The attack resulted in considerable damage to the facility, although no injuries were reported. Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the assault, labeling it a “flagrant violation of its sovereignty” and a direct threat to national security. The ministry stated, “The State of Qatar expresses its strong condemnation and denunciation of the blatant Iranian attack targeting Ras Laffan Industrial City.”

In response to the missile strike, Qatar has taken decisive measures, including declaring Iranian embassy military and security attaches as persona non grata and giving them 24 hours to leave the country. Furthermore, Qatar reserves the right to respond in accordance with international law, emphasizing its commitment to self-defense.

The missile attack comes amid escalating tensions between Iran and the US-Israel alliance, with Iran previously threatening to target oil and gas facilities across the Gulf region in retaliation for Israeli strikes. This incident is part of a broader conflict that has seen the UAE face 327 ballistic missiles since the onset of these hostilities.

Following the attack, Brent crude prices surged more than 7%, reaching $111.23, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude rose about 4% to $100.04. Such fluctuations in oil prices underscore the global implications of the conflict and the strategic importance of Qatar’s energy resources.

Qatar had already suspended LNG production on March 2, 2026, due to earlier strikes on its facilities, highlighting the ongoing risks to its energy infrastructure. Victoria Gatenby remarked, “This is what Qatar’s wealth is built on,” emphasizing the critical nature of the Ras Laffan facility for the nation.
