By Vikram Nair / 18.03.2026
Sporting achieved a remarkable feat in the Champions League by defeating Bodo/Glimt 5-0 after extra time, overturning a 3-0 deficit from the first leg to win 5-3 on aggregate. This stunning turnaround has propelled Sporting into the quarter-finals of the prestigious tournament.
The match saw Goncalo Inacio open the scoring for Sporting in the 34th minute, followed by Pedro Goncalves doubling the lead in the 61st minute. Luis Suarez then converted a crucial penalty in the 78th minute, leveling the tie and igniting hopes for a comeback.
Maxi Araujo added the fourth goal in extra time, and Rafael Nel sealed the victory with a fifth goal in added time. Sporting’s dominance was evident as they registered 11 attempts in the opening 15 minutes of the match, showcasing their determination to turn the tie around.
Sporting, the back-to-back Portuguese champions, played in front of a raucous home crowd that provided unwavering support throughout the match. Araujo expressed the team’s belief in their ability to succeed, stating, “We always believed that, with the help of this amazing crowd, we would be able to make it.” He further added, “It was amazing, we put on a great effort and that paid off. I’m so proud of this group and happy to have helped give the fans a night to remember.”
Bodo/Glimt, who had previously defeated notable teams such as Manchester City, Atletico Madrid, and Inter Milan in earlier rounds, aimed to become only the second Norwegian club to reach the Champions League quarter-finals. However, they were unable to withstand Sporting’s relentless pressure and attacking prowess.
This victory marks a significant milestone for Sporting as they continue their pursuit of European glory. Observers now look forward to seeing how far they can advance in the tournament, with expectations high following this impressive comeback.
