Switzerland prepares for Argentina challenge in World Cup quarter-finals

Switzerland is set to face Argentina in the World Cup quarter-finals, marking their first appearance at this stage of the tournament in 72 years. Despite the historic achievement, the Swiss team acknowledges the significant challenge posed by an Argentine squad featuring Lionel Messi.

Swiss players have expressed admiration for Messi’s abilities but maintain confidence in their own strengths and strategies. Midfielder Denis Zakaria described Argentina as the world’s best team and Messi as an outstanding player, yet believes Switzerland possesses the quality to contain the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Zakaria highlighted that while stopping Messi for an entire match would be difficult, the team’s focus extends beyond just one player. He emphasised that Argentina is not solely about Messi, and other players on the squad are also highly skilled. This suggests a collective effort will be crucial for Switzerland.

Forward Zeki Amdouni echoed these sentiments, acknowledging Messi’s greatness but also stating that Switzerland has identified potential weaknesses in the defending champions’ play. He indicated that the team has studied Argentina thoroughly and believes they can exploit spaces within their defence.

Amdouni also addressed comments from former Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann, who suggested Swiss players might show too much respect for Messi. Amdouni clarified that while Messi is a great player and an idol for many, the Swiss team is committed to giving their best on the field to try and defeat Argentina.

Switzerland advanced to the quarter-finals after eliminating Algeria and Colombia in the knockout rounds. This marks a significant return to the quarter-final stage after a long absence.

Argentina’s perspective and past encounters

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni spoke about his team’s performance, noting their resilience in matches, including a comeback victory against Egypt in the round of 16. Messi scored eight goals in the tournament, matching France’s Kylian Mbappé.

Scaloni praised Messi’s consistent performance and decisiveness, attributing it to his thorough preparation and the support he receives from the team. He also acknowledged Switzerland as a strong opponent with a history in the World Cup and experienced players, stating that Argentina respects them.

The upcoming match is not the first time Switzerland and Argentina have met in the knockout stages of the World Cup. They previously played in the 2014 round of 16, where Argentina secured a victory in extra time.

However, Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka, who was part of the 2014 squad along with Ricardo Rodriguez, stated that the current match is a completely different encounter. He emphasised that the past game would not be a factor in the upcoming quarter-final.

Xhaka also expressed confidence in Switzerland’s qualities, suggesting that while few people discuss them, the team possesses many strengths. He indicated that the team would demonstrate their capabilities on the pitch.

Switzerland won their group in the current tournament, which included Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Qatar. The team has also reached the knockout rounds in five of its last six World Cup appearances.

Despite their recent achievements, Zakaria reiterated the need for preparedness, stating, “We have to be ready. We know that we play against the best team in the world.”
