Thibaut Courtois Injury Update: Key Details from the Match Against Manchester City
By Vikram Nair / 18.03.2026
“Courtois had some minor discomfort, and we substituted him out as a precaution. I think he’ll be available for Sunday against Atlético de Madrid,” stated Álvaro Arbeloa following the Champions League match.
Thibaut Courtois was substituted at half-time during Real Madrid’s crucial Champions League encounter against Manchester City, where the team held a commanding aggregate lead of 4-1. He was replaced by Andriy Lunin, who has made 66 appearances for the club.
During the first half of the match, Courtois made significant saves from Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and Rodri Hernandez, showcasing his importance to the team. However, the decision to substitute him was made due to minor discomfort, with the coaching staff opting for caution.
Unfortunately, Courtois is now ruled out of the upcoming Madrid derby against Atlético de Madrid due to a hamstring strain. He will undergo tests to confirm the severity of the injury.
If the hamstring strain is confirmed to be minor, there is a possibility that Courtois could return to action within 7-10 days. However, details remain unconfirmed.
The absence of Courtois for the derby is a significant blow for Real Madrid, as they prepare to face their city rivals. His performances have been crucial, and the team will rely on Lunin to step up in his absence.
As the situation develops, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely for updates on Courtois’ recovery and potential return to the pitch.
