The inauguration of the Missing Link project promises to significantly reduce travel time and distance on one of India’s busiest expressways. Scheduled for May 1, 2026, this project will enhance connectivity between Mumbai and Pune.

The Missing Link project spans 13.3 km. It reduces the distance between the two cities by around 6 km. Travel time is expected to decrease by approximately 20 to 30 minutes.

The initial phase will allow only light vehicles on the new route. Buses will be permitted in a later phase. Heavy vehicles will continue using the existing route.

This stretch of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway has faced challenges. The Borghat section features sharp turns and steep gradients, causing significant traffic congestion. On average, drivers experience delays of around 30 minutes, which can extend up to 120 minutes during peak times.

Fuel wastage in the Borghat region amounts to ₹1 Crore daily due to these delays. The project includes the world’s widest underground tunnel, measuring 22.33 metres.

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway has been operational since 2002. Its development marked a significant milestone in India’s road infrastructure.

Maharashtra Day coincides with the inauguration date, symbolizing progress in state infrastructure projects. Officials anticipate that this new route will alleviate long-standing traffic issues.

As India continues to modernize its transport systems, projects like the Missing Link are crucial. They aim not only to enhance connectivity but also to contribute positively to economic growth.
