<p>The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is making significant strides in sustainable infrastructure development through innovative initiatives that utilize industrial by-products and advanced technology. One of the most impactful projects involves the use of Waste Foundry Sand in road construction, a move that not only addresses waste management issues but also aligns with the Government of India’s vision for a circular economy.</p>
<p>CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI) is spearheading this initiative, collaborating with the Institute of Indian Foundrymen (IIF) and Suyog Elements India Pvt. Ltd. to develop solutions that convert waste foundry sand into a valuable resource for infrastructure projects. Waste foundry sand, a by-product of the metal casting industry, is generated in large quantities, particularly from the Coimbatore foundry cluster, which is home to approximately 800–1000 foundry units. This collaboration aims to promote environmentally sustainable road construction practices while reducing dependency on natural aggregates.</p>
<p>Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, a prominent figure in this initiative, stated, &#8220;The utilization of industrial by-products like Waste Foundry Sand in road construction reflects CSIR’s commitment to sustainable development and circular economy.&#8221; This sentiment is echoed by Sushil Sharma, who emphasized the project&#8217;s goal of transforming waste into a valuable infrastructure resource, thereby addressing significant environmental challenges.</p>
<p>In addition to sustainable road construction, CSIR is also advancing drone technology through its National Aerospace Laboratories (CSIR-NAL). The institute has successfully transferred technology for the QPlane eVTOL (electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing) drone to KRR Aerospace for mass production. This drone is designed for multi-sector applications, including defense, agriculture, and logistics, showcasing the versatility and potential of drone technology in various fields.</p>
<p>The QPlane eVTOL drone features fully electric propulsion and has an operational range of around 20 km. This innovative technology not only enhances operational efficiency but also aligns with global trends towards greener aviation solutions. Dr. Ch. Ravi Sekhar from CSIR-CRRI remarked, &#8220;CSIR-CRRI has been at the forefront of developing sustainable and innovative road technologies,&#8221; highlighting the institute&#8217;s ongoing commitment to research and development in this area.</p>
<p>The collaboration between CSIR-CRRI and IIF is set to facilitate industry outreach, with CSIR-CRRI providing technical expertise while IIF engages with the foundry sector to implement these sustainable practices. This partnership aims to convert waste foundry sand into a resource that can significantly contribute to infrastructure development, thereby supporting the nation’s growth.</p>
<p>As these initiatives progress, the impact on both the environment and the economy is expected to be substantial.
