The recent concerns regarding an LPG gas shortage in India have prompted many to question the actual availability of this essential fuel. However, the government has stated unequivocally that there is no shortage of LPG in the country. This assurance comes amidst rising demand and panic ordering, which had temporarily skewed perceptions of supply.

In response to the increased demand, India’s domestic refinery production has been ramped up by 40 percent, resulting in a daily output of 50 thousand metric tonnes of LPG. Oil companies are successfully delivering over 50 lakh cylinders every day, which is a significant operational achievement given the circumstances.

Despite the spike in demand for LPG cylinders, which had surged to 89 lakh due to panic buying, the situation has stabilized, and the demand has now decreased to 50 lakh cylinders. This reduction indicates that the initial panic may have subsided, allowing for a more manageable supply and distribution process.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has confirmed that all retail fuel outlets across the country have sufficient supplies of LPG. In fact, India currently has enough petrol, diesel, and LPG stock to last for nearly 60 days. This stockpile is crucial for ensuring that the country can meet its energy needs without disruption.

India’s total storage capacity for crude oil and fuel is approximately 74 days, which provides an additional buffer against potential supply chain disruptions. Furthermore, approximately 26 states have allocated 22,000 tons of commercial LPG nationwide, demonstrating a coordinated effort to ensure that commercial needs are met as well.

According to Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary (Marketing & Oil Refinery) at the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, “There is no shortage of LPG at any distributorship.” This statement is supported by the fact that every Indian refinery is reportedly running at over 100 percent utilization, which underscores the commitment to meeting national demand.

While the government has called upon citizens not to be misled by what it describes as a “deliberately mischievous, coordinated campaign of misinformation,” it is clear that the situation is being closely monitored. The public has been urged to remain calm and avoid panic buying, as there is no need to panic.
