AIIMS Mangalagiri has made significant strides in medical education and healthcare delivery since its inception. The institute, which began its MBBS course in 2018 with an initial intake of 50 students, now boasts a total of 748 MBBS students, with an annual intake of 125 students. Recently, AIIMS Mangalagiri conferred degrees on 49 MBBS graduates, five MD/MS postgraduate students, and four Post-Doctoral Certificate Course students, highlighting its commitment to producing qualified medical professionals.

In addition to its educational achievements, AIIMS Mangalagiri has completed a remarkable 31 lakh outpatient department (OPD) consultations, with a current daily patient footfall of around 3,500 to 4,000 patients. This high volume of consultations underscores the institution’s role in addressing the healthcare needs of the community.

To further enhance its healthcare services, AIIMS Mangalagiri has installed a Nucleic Acid Amplification Testing (NAAT) system, which is the first of its kind among all AIIMS in South India. The NAAT system, which cost approximately ₹1.73 crore, is capable of detecting viral RNA/DNA with high sensitivity, enabling early identification of infections such as HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.

Ahanthem Singh, a representative of the institution, stated, “The NAAT system enhances safety by significantly reducing the diagnostic window period,” emphasizing the importance of timely diagnosis in patient care. This development aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure and services.

Anupriya Patel, a key figure in the health sector, remarked, “The Union government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is giving utmost priority to the medical sector.” This statement reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare services across the country.

As AIIMS Mangalagiri continues to evolve, observers anticipate further advancements in both medical education and patient care. The integration of advanced diagnostic technologies and the successful graduation of medical students are seen as positive indicators of the institution’s future impact on the healthcare landscape.

What the data shows

The recent developments surrounding the National Medical Commission (NMC) in India raise critical questions about the state of medical education and practice in the country. Why are junior doctors and foreign medical graduates (FMGs) protesting, and what does this mean for the future of healthcare in India? The answer lies in a combination of low salaries, inadequate compensation for online classes, and ongoing issues with quackery that continue to plague the medical system.

On March 18, 2026, protests erupted in Kerala as junior doctors demanded better pay, with many appealing for a daily wage of Rs. 1,300. This comes amid a broader context where nurses are also protesting for a minimum monthly salary of Rs. 40,000, highlighting the growing discontent within the healthcare workforce. The NMC’s recent decision to withdraw 12 super-speciality seats from the NEET SS Round 1 seat matrix for 2025 has further fueled frustrations among medical professionals.

In response to the protests, the NMC has agreed to revise the FMGE guidelines, a move that FMGs are heralding as a victory. This decision follows significant unrest over the lack of compensation for online classes, which has been a contentious issue since the pandemic shifted many educational formats online. The FMGs’ claims of victory are underscored by the NMC’s acknowledgment of the need for reform in this area.

However, the situation is complicated by the persistent issue of quackery in the medical field. Reports indicate that quackery continues to thrive despite existing NMC laws, exposing the inaction of state councils to enforce regulations effectively. This ongoing problem raises concerns about patient safety and the integrity of medical practice in India.

Additionally, the NMC is facing challenges in the cathode materials market, which is driven by OEM demand and long-term agreements. High-nickel NMC chemistries are competing for dominance in premium passenger vehicles, indicating a broader context of technological advancements that may impact the medical sector indirectly. Supply chain security has become a primary procurement driver for OEMs and Tier-1 manufacturers, reflecting the interconnectedness of various industries.

As the protests continue, the exact timeline for issuing the revised FMGE guidelines remains unconfirmed. This uncertainty adds to the tension among medical professionals who are advocating for immediate changes to improve their working conditions and educational frameworks.

In summary, the NMC is at a crossroads, facing significant pressure from junior doctors, FMGs, and other stakeholders within the healthcare system. The outcomes of these protests and the NMC’s responses will likely shape the future of medical education and practice in India, as well as the overall healthcare landscape.

She further noted that the current government is moving ahead with the project with clear financial planning and accountability. This reflects a commitment to enhancing infrastructure and healthcare access in the capital.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) was established to oversee medical education and practice in India, replacing the Medical Council of India (MCI) in 2020. Since its inception, the NMC has been working on various initiatives aimed at improving the healthcare system.

Launch of the National Medical Register

In August 2024, the NMC launched the National Medical Register (NMR), a centralized database of licensed allopathic doctors in India. However, the response has been underwhelming, with only 10,411 applications received for NMR registration in the first eight months, and 98% of these applications not approved. Dr. K.V. Babu, who applied early for registration, expressed frustration over the process, stating, “I was probably the first person to apply for NMR registration in the country… but it did not happen. I am still not registered.”

National Exit Test and Consultations

The NMC is also working on the rollout of the National Exit Test (NExT), which aims to standardize the exit examination for medical graduates. Dr. Abhijat Sheth noted that the technical framework for NExT has largely been developed, and the next stage will involve wider consultations to ensure smooth implementation.

Addressing Mental Health Concerns

In response to increasing concerns about student suicides, the NMC has issued a mandatory advisory for medical colleges to report such incidents and strengthen mental health support. The Supreme Court of India has directed the NMC to address these mental health concerns, emphasizing the need for institutions to maintain accurate records of student suicides or unnatural deaths.

Regulatory Actions and Compliance
