Kumaun University in Nainital has announced the implementation of a new faculty evaluation system, which was confirmed during a meeting on March 24, 2026. Nandan Singh Bisht has been appointed as the deputy controller of examinations to oversee this initiative.

The newly approved faculty evaluation system utilizes a 100-point scale, with specific performance metrics designed to enhance academic quality and accountability. Teachers who score below 60 percent will have their salary increases withheld and may face compulsory retirement, while those who achieve above 75 percent will receive a certificate of appreciation.

In addition to the scoring system, faculty members are now required to present at least one paper at a national or international conference to maintain their positions. Stricter criteria have also been established for higher research degrees such as Doctor of Science (D Sc.) and Doctor of Letters (DLitt), with a minimum of 12 years of experience required.

The meeting also saw the promotion of seven teachers under the Career Advancement Scheme, reflecting the university’s commitment to recognizing and rewarding academic contributions.

Diwan Singh Rawat, a university official, stated, “These decisions taken as a whole, represent an important initiative toward strengthening academic excellence, research quality, transparency and accountability at the university.” This statement underscores the administration’s focus on improving educational standards.

The changes come at a time when Kumaun University aims to elevate its status within the educational landscape of Uttarakhand, which has a diverse population that includes a significant number of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
