This outbreak marks the first known instance associated with cruise ships, raising significant concerns about public health safety in maritime travel.

Nicole M. Iovine, MD, PhD, noted that there might have been isolated cases previously unrecognized as hantavirus infections. She advised passengers to report any sightings of rodents or droppings to cruise personnel immediately.

The World Health Organization (WHO) stated it is aware of the situation and is supporting a public health event involving the cruise vessel. Two crew members onboard require urgent medical care as well.

Authorities are still determining how the patients contracted the virus. The strain of hantavirus involved in this outbreak remains unknown.
