Before the release of the CPI(M) candidate list for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, expectations were low for the party, which had suffered a significant defeat in the 2021 elections, failing to secure a single seat. The Left Front, which once dominated West Bengal politics for 34 years until 2011, found itself in a challenging position, struggling to regain its former influence.

On March 16, 2026, the CPI(M) led Left Front made a decisive move by unveiling its candidate list, which includes 192 candidates contesting for 294 Assembly seats. This marks a strategic effort to revitalize its presence in the state. Notably, the list features 28 women candidates, reflecting a commitment to gender representation.

Among the prominent candidates are Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, who will contest from the Jadavpur constituency, and Minakshi Mukherjee from Uttarpara. Dipsita Dhar is set to represent North Dum Dum, while Sabina Yasmin will contest from Kaliganj, a poignant choice following the tragic death of her daughter in political violence.

The elections are scheduled for April 23 and 29, 2026, with results to be announced on May 4, 2026. The CPI(M) aims to contest 142 seats, while its allies in the Left Front, including the CPI, RSP, and AIFB, will cover the remaining constituencies.

Biman Bose, a key figure in the CPI(M), emphasized the party’s renewed focus, stating, “The fight this time is against the neo-Fascist forces in the country, the autocratic activities in our state, and the hardships faced by the people owing to these.” He further noted the importance of reviving Leftist politics in West Bengal.

The Left Front’s efforts to regain power come in the wake of its historical dominance, which has been overshadowed by recent electoral failures. In the 2021 elections, the party’s performance was dismal, winning only one seat, a stark contrast to its previous rule.

As the political landscape evolves, the CPI(M) is determined to strengthen Left forces in the state. Bose mentioned that candidates for the remaining seats will be finalized and announced within three to four days, indicating a proactive approach to the upcoming elections.

With the stakes high, the CPI(M) is poised to challenge the current political dynamics in West Bengal, aiming to reclaim its influence and address the concerns of the electorate.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the finalization of candidates for the remaining seats, but the party’s initial list sets the stage for a competitive electoral battle ahead.
