“This victory is the victory of the people of Panihati, of the entire Bengal,” said Ratna Debnath after winning her election on May 4, 2026. Debnath secured the Panihati Assembly constituency as a BJP candidate. She won by a margin of 28,836 votes against Tirthankar Ghosh from TMC.

Debnath received 87,977 votes while Ghosh garnered 59,141 votes. Kalatan Dasgupta from CPI(M) came in third with 24,032 votes. This marked Debnath’s debut in politics.

Her campaign focused on women’s safety and accountability in governance. Debnath’s political journey began following the tragic rape and murder of her daughter at RG Kar Medical College in August 2024. This incident triggered widespread outrage and mobilized support for her candidacy.

The BJP achieved a historic win in West Bengal, crossing the two-thirds mark with a total of 202 seats. This election result indicates a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.

Debnath expressed gratitude during her victory speech: “I dedicate this victory to Prime Minister Modi.” She acknowledged that she could not have achieved this alone.

Her election reflects not only personal resilience but also broader societal issues regarding women’s safety and justice in West Bengal.

Reaction from the field

The electoral debut of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections is poised to significantly impact the political landscape. C. Joseph Vijay, the party leader, has announced his candidates for the elections scheduled on March 29, 2026. This marks a critical moment for TVK as it seeks to establish its presence against established parties such as the DMK and AIADMK.

Vijay will contest from two constituencies: Perambur and Tiruchi East. In Perambur, he faces incumbent MLA R.D. Shekar from the DMK, while in Tiruchi East, he will compete against DMK’s Inigo Irudayaraj and AIADMK’s K. Rajasekaran. The competition is expected to be fierce, as these constituencies have a history of strong party loyalty.

TVK’s campaign is built around a manifesto that includes ambitious plans to address pressing issues such as drug abuse and youth unemployment. Vijay has proposed measures to provide collateral-free education loans of up to 20 lakhs and unemployment allowances of 4,000 rupees for graduates and 2,000 rupees for diploma holders. Additionally, he aims to create 5 lakh internship opportunities through micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which could significantly benefit the youth of Tamil Nadu.

Moreover, the establishment of a Tamil Nadu Youth Advisory Council is part of Vijay’s strategy to enhance youth participation in governance. His campaign also emphasizes a commitment to a corruption-free administration and ensuring the safety of women, with Vijay stating, “I will ensure the safety of women.” This focus on women’s safety resonates with a growing demand for better protection and rights for women in the region.

In terms of financial support, the campaign promises a monthly stipend of 10,000 rupees for graduates and 8,000 rupees for ITI students, along with a 25 lakh collateral-free loan for entrepreneurship. These initiatives are designed to empower young individuals and stimulate economic growth within the state.

Vijay’s assertive stance is reflected in his quotes, where he declares, “I will not touch even one paisa of the people’s money,” emphasizing his commitment to integrity in governance. His confidence is evident as he proclaims, “TVK will win,” signaling his determination to make a significant impact in this election.

As the election date approaches, the political dynamics in Tamil Nadu are expected to evolve. The performance of TVK in this election will be closely monitored, as it could set the stage for future political contests in the state. Details remain unconfirmed regarding how the electorate will respond to TVK’s proposals and whether they will resonate with the voters in a competitive political environment.

The Maharashtra government has revoked Uber's provisional bike taxi licenses, citing regulatory violations and complaints of harassment against women riders.

“We directed them to submit necessary documents; however they did not submit any of them, prompting us to take a decision to revoke their temporary licenses across Maharashtra,” said Pratap Sarnaik, a key official in the Maharashtra government.

On March 9, 2026, the Maharashtra government took decisive action by revoking the provisional bike taxi licenses for Uber, Ola, and Rapido. This decision was rooted in regulatory violations, including the failure of these companies to submit necessary documentation and a series of complaints regarding the harassment of women riders using their services.

The provisional licenses had been granted in September 2025 under the Maharashtra E-Bike Taxi Rules, 2024, which mandated that all operations be conducted using 100% electric vehicles. These rules were introduced to promote sustainable transportation and create employment opportunities for local youth. However, the state government found that the companies had not complied with the requirements set forth in these regulations.

In addition to the documentation issues, the state received multiple complaints alleging harassment of women passengers, which further exacerbated the situation. The licenses had provided the platforms with a 30-day window to obtain final approval and meet all regulatory conditions, but the lack of compliance led to the current revocation.

This marks the second time that bike taxi services have been banned in Maharashtra, with the first prohibition occurring in January 2023. The state had previously introduced the Maharashtra E-Bike Taxi Rules in an effort to regulate the burgeoning bike taxi market, which had seen an increase in the number of autorickshaws and growing pressure on urban traffic.

“If they have not furnished the documents, their temporary licenses must be revoked,” Sarnaik added, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring compliance with safety measures and operational standards. The provisional licenses required operators to adhere to strict codes regarding driver conduct, vehicle specifications, fare transparency, and overall accountability.

Since April 2024, the Maharashtra transport department has taken action against 130 bike taxis, collecting fines totaling more than Rs 33 lakh. This ongoing scrutiny reflects the government’s focus on maintaining safety and regulatory compliance in the rapidly evolving transport sector.

Looking ahead, the state government has indicated that the ban could be lifted if the companies submit the required documents and demonstrate strict adherence to the established rules. “It is only temporary. If they follow our norms and the terms and conditions of the permits, we will give the permits again,” Sarnaik stated, leaving the door open for potential reinstatement of the licenses in the future.
