Glasgow Commonwealth Games: Indian athletes compete in weightlifting, athletics, and swimming

Indian athletes are actively participating in various events at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, with notable performances in weightlifting, athletics, and swimming. The day’s events saw a silver medal win in weightlifting and several qualifications for upcoming finals.

Weightlifting Highlights

Gyaneshwari Yadav secured a silver medal in the women’s 53kg weightlifting event. She achieved a personal-best total of 199kg, comprising an 88kg snatch and a 111kg clean and jerk. Her performance was recognized by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who congratulated her on social media platform X, highlighting her personal best achievement and its potential to inspire young athletes.

In the women’s 58kg final, Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam is competing, carrying India’s medal hopes. During the snatch portion of the event, she successfully cleared 83kg on her first attempt, followed by a more assured lift of 85kg. She completed her snatch campaign with a successful 87kg lift, positioning herself among the contenders as the competition progresses to the clean and jerk, which is considered her stronger discipline.

The current standings after the women’s 58kg snatch saw Rafiatu Folashade Lawal of Nigeria leading with 103kg, setting new Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth records. Ann Sophie Taschereau of Canada followed with 94kg, while Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam and Eliza Pratt of England both recorded 87kg.

Margarett Bless Harris of Nauru opened the clean and jerk round with a successful 75kg lift. Other medal contenders, including Bindyarani Devi, Rafiatu Folashade Lawal, and Ann-Sophie Taschereau, were yet to begin their clean and jerk attempts.

Athletics and Swimming Performances

In athletics, Murali Sreeshankar qualified for the men’s long jump final with a best jump of 8.01m. Lokesh Satyanathan also secured his spot in the men’s long jump final with an effort of 7.77m. Tejas Shirse advanced to the men’s 110m hurdles final after finishing third in his heat with a time of 13.76s.

However, Gurindervir Singh exited the men’s 100m event. He finished 28th overall in the heats with a time of 10.39 seconds, failing to qualify for the semifinals, which required athletes to be among the top 17. Competing in Heat 4 from lane five, Gurindervir Singh had a promising start but faded in the final meters. Despite finishing second in his heat, his time was not sufficient to advance. His performance was below his personal best and national record of 10.09 seconds, set earlier this year at the Federation Cup in Ranchi.

In swimming, Sajan Prakash advanced to the men’s 200m butterfly final, clocking 1:59.58. Additionally, Swatik Patil qualified for the men’s 100m breaststroke SB9 final with the sixth-fastest time in the heats, recording 1:15.85.

Boxing and Gymnastics Updates

Indian boxers also saw success, with Sachin Siwach advancing to the men’s 60kg quarter-finals. He secured a 4-1 split-decision win against William Hewitt of England. Ankush Panghal also moved to the men’s 80kg quarter-finals, defeating Zalaan Jan of Antigua and Barbuda with a 5-0 victory in the Round of 16.

In artistic gymnastics, Protistha Samanta finished seventh in the women’s vault final, concluding her participation in that event.
