India secures discus bronze, Parul Chaudhary finishes 13th at Commonwealth Games

India added to its medal tally at the Commonwealth Games, with Seema Kaliramna securing a bronze medal in the women’s discus throw. Her best effort measured 58.65m. This achievement marks India‘s fourth medal in athletics at the current Games and the 17th overall for the nation.

Seema began her competition with a foul but quickly recovered with a throw of 57.32m. Her medal-winning throw of 58.65m came in the third round. Despite not improving on this mark in subsequent attempts, which included two more fouls and an unsuccessful final throw, the distance was sufficient to maintain her bronze medal position.

Jamaica‘s Samantha Hall claimed the gold medal with a throw of 61.66m, while Canada‘s Julia Tunks earned the silver medal with 60.67m. Fellow Indian athlete Nidhi Rani finished fourth in the event with a best throw of 57.10m, narrowly missing a podium finish.

Seema Kaliramna‘s bronze medal represents a notable comeback. After returning to competition following motherhood, the 27-year-old athlete won gold at the 2025 National Games and later reclaimed the national title. She is also pursuing a PhD while balancing her elite sports career and motherhood.

Decathlon and 5000m events

In other athletic events, Tejaswin Shankar ended Day 1 of the men’s decathlon in second place overall. He accumulated 4,339 points after five events, trailing Canada‘s Damian Warner by just 14 points, who leads with 4,353 points. Shankar‘s performance included a high jump clearance of 2.15m, which earned him 944 points.

Despite competing with a strapped knee, Shankar completed the 400m event in 49.51 seconds, adding 837 points to his total. This strong showing positions him firmly in contention for a medal as the competition progresses to Day 2.

Meanwhile, Parul Chaudhary of India finished 13th in the women’s 5000m final, recording a time of 15:08.6. Chaudhary was initially part of the leading group, holding seventh place after the first 1000m. However, as the race intensified, she gradually fell behind, moving to ninth at 2000m, 11th at 3000m, and 13th at 4000m, ultimately maintaining that position across the finish line.

Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, alongside Rohit Yadav and Yashvir Singh, qualified for the men’s javelin final. Chopra, a 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, finished fifth in the qualification round with a throw of 79.61m. Rohit Yadav secured ninth place with 78.37m, and Yashvir Singh took 10th with 78.36m, ensuring a full Indian contingent in the medal round on Friday.

Additional Indian performances

The Commonwealth Games continue to see strong performances from the Indian contingent. The bronze medal by Seema Kaliramna followed a silver medal won by Lovepreet Singh in weightlifting earlier in the day.

The overall medal tally for India at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games now stands at 17. The performances on Day 8 have added to the nation’s success at the event.

Athletes like Animesh Kujur, Vishal TK, and Tajinderpal Singh Toor are also in action, with hopes of adding more medals for India. The competition continues to unfold with various events yet to conclude.

The Indian contingent will be looking to build on these successes in the final stages of the competition.
