Norris Claims First Grand Prix Win of 2026

Lando Norris secured his and McLaren’s first Grand Prix victory of 2026 at the Hungarian Grand Prix. He finished ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli. The race featured mid-race drama and a late retirement for Norris’s teammate, Oscar Piastri.

Norris, who started from pole position, spent the initial part of the race behind Piastri after being overtaken at Turn 2 on the opening lap. Piastri maintained the lead, with McLaren resisting Norris’s requests to pass.

The internal team battle shifted after the halfway point when Piastri, following his second pit stop, encountered traffic and made contact with a Williams car. This incident, combined with Norris’s strong pace in clear air before his own second stop, influenced the race outcome. Piastri’s day concluded with a retirement due to an apparent gearbox problem.

Race Incidents and Penalties

Piastri’s stoppage triggered a Virtual Safety Car (VSC), leading to further pit lane activity. Verstappen and Antonelli, who had recently changed tyres, remained on track to secure second and third positions, respectively. They finished ahead of the Ferrari duo of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, who both made three pit stops.

Hamilton initially emerged from his final stop ahead of Antonelli but had to cede the position. Replays indicated he had crossed the relevant VSC white line at the end of the start/finish straight just behind the Mercedes car. Hamilton also received a five-second penalty for speeding in the pits, which ended his chances of a podium finish. Despite this, he pressed on, challenging Antonelli until the flag. Leclerc moved ahead for fourth place after the penalty was applied to Hamilton.

Isack Hadjar secured sixth place in the other Red Bull machine. George Russell finished seventh after a challenging start to the race, where an anti-stall issue caused him to drop to 21st position.

Qualifying and Team Performances

In an extremely close qualifying session at the Hungaroring circuit, Norris claimed pole position by a narrow margin over Hamilton. Leclerc took third, and championship leader Antonelli qualified fourth. However, both Hamilton and Antonelli faced penalties, receiving three-place grid drops from the stewards.

Hamilton was penalised for failing to slow sufficiently under yellow flags, while the Ferrari driver was punished for impeding Piastri. These penalties meant Norris started from pole, followed by Leclerc, Piastri, and Verstappen. Hamilton was demoted to fifth, ahead of Russell, and Antonelli dropped to seventh. Sergio Perez moved from the back of the grid to the pit lane after making set-up changes.

The Racing Bulls team achieved another double points finish, with Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad placing eighth and 10th, respectively. They finished around Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg, while Hulkenberg’s teammate, Gabriel Bortoleto, just missed out on points in 11th place.

Aston Martin, with their updated cars, showed an encouraging performance this season. Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso finished 13th and 14th, splitting the Alpine cars of Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto, and finishing ahead of both Haas and Williams cars.

Piastri observed the final 15 laps from the sidelines after his retirement. The Cadillacs of Valtteri Bottas, who reported overheating brakes, and Perez, who experienced an issue at the front-left, also failed to complete the race.
