Governance Deficiencies Lead to Suspension

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has suspended the recognition of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI), citing significant governance deficiencies. This decision, announced on August 12, 2026, follows the federation’s failure to conduct timely elections and an unsatisfactory response to a show-cause notice issued by the ministry.

As a result of the suspension, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has been directed to establish an ad-hoc committee. This committee will be responsible for managing the sport of table tennis in India. The ministry’s order also mandates consultation with the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) to create an interim regulatory mechanism until a properly constituted governance structure is re-established within the TTFI.

The recognition of national sports federations in India is granted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, which oversees the administration of various sports at the national level. This recognition is contingent upon compliance with regulations concerning elections, the tenure of office-bearers, athlete selection processes, and adherence to the National Sports Development Code of India, 2011.

Internal Turmoil and Athlete Welfare Concerns

The TTFI has experienced internal turmoil over recent months. One notable event was the suspension of its Secretary General, Kamlesh Mehta, in January, based on allegations of financial irregularities. Although Mehta’s suspension was later quashed by the Delhi High Court, it was widely perceived to stem from an internal power struggle within the federation.

Further issues came to light when prominent player Manika Batra was excluded from the Asian Games squad. This exclusion was attributed to a lack of sufficient domestic game time. Batra publicly questioned the decision, alleging that the selection process was ambiguous and unfair, and sought intervention from the Sports Ministry.

The ministry took note of these concerns, among others, and issued a show-cause notice to the TTFI. According to ministry sources, the federation’s response was deemed unconvincing. The ministry also indicated that the TTFI had not fulfilled its duty to ensure athlete welfare, citing delays in holding the National Championships last year as an example.

Previous Suspensions and Future Steps

The TTFI is currently led by Meghna Ahlawat, who assumed the presidency in December 2022. Ahlawat is the first woman president of the federation. The body was scheduled to hold elections this year, but there has been no announcement regarding the commencement of this process.

The ministry stated that the TTFI has not adhered to the principles of accountability and democratic functioning expected of a National Sports Federation. It also noted that the federation had repeatedly disregarded directions and guidelines issued by the ministry.

This is not the first instance of the TTFI facing administrative action. In February 2022, the federation was suspended by the Delhi High Court following a petition from Manika Batra concerning the selection policy that led to her omission from the Asian Championships that year. At that time, the Delhi High Court expressed dismay at the state of affairs within the TTFI and ordered the appointment of an administrator. The federation’s recognition was restored in December of the same year after new elections were held.

The current order places the sport under interim administration until a compliant federation structure is restored, with the IOA tasked with forming an ad-hoc committee to manage table tennis.
