Songs Take Center Stage at MG University Kalolsavam
What role do songs play in cultural events like the MG University Kalolsavam?
The recent MG University Kalolsavam, held on March 6, 2026, in Thiruvalla, highlighted the pivotal role of songs in cultural expression and community engagement. The Maharaja’s College folk song team clinched the first prize in the competition, showcasing a song learned from the Muthuvan tribal community in Kerala. This event not only celebrated musical talent but also emphasized the importance of preserving and sharing indigenous songs.
The Muthuvan community, known for their rich oral traditions, blends Malayalam and Tamil in their songs, which are passed down through generations. Anjana Raveendran, a key figure in this narrative, shared her experience of connecting with the Muthuvan tribe. “We connected with members of the Muthuvan tribe through friends. We stayed with the community for three days and learned the songs ourselves,” she stated, underscoring the deep cultural exchange involved in her research.
At the MG University Kalolsavam, 64 competing teams participated, and the folk song category has been a part of the festival for three years, with Maharaja’s College winning all three times. This consistent success reflects the college’s commitment to preserving folk traditions and promoting cultural diversity through music. Raveendran’s journey into folk music began in her childhood, influenced by her family, and she now focuses on documenting and notating these songs for future generations.
In a contrasting narrative, the music industry faced scrutiny when popular artist Badshah issued an apology for his song “Tateeree,” which was criticized for its objectionable content. Following the backlash, police initiated a Look Out Circular against him to prevent his departure from the country. Badshah expressed regret, stating, “I never intended to say anything objectionable against any woman or child from Haryana,” highlighting the complexities artists face regarding cultural sensitivities.
The Haryana State Commission for Women responded by issuing a summons to Badshah, and an FIR was registered against him under the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986. Haryana Education Minister Mahipal Dhanda condemned the portrayal of school girls in the song, emphasizing the need for responsible representation in music.
Meanwhile, Sangeetanjali Shashtriya Sangeet Samiti organized a Holi song and dance event, featuring 20 artists performing a variety of regional songs, including Garhwali, Kumauni, Ruhelkhandi, Braj, and Rajasthani Holi songs. This event showcased the diversity of Indian folk music and its ability to bring communities together through celebration.
As the MG University Kalolsavam continues to evolve, the significance of songs in cultural identity and expression remains a focal point. The juxtaposition of traditional folk music with contemporary issues in the music industry raises questions about the future of cultural representation in songs. What remains to be seen is how these discussions will influence both the preservation of folk traditions and the evolution of modern music.
