Dubai Airport Drone Attack Disrupts Flights and Causes Fire
On March 16, 2026, multiple drone attacks targeted energy facilities in the United Arab Emirates, significantly disrupting operations at Dubai International Airport. The attacks resulted in a fire near the airport, prompting the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority to announce a temporary closure of the country’s airspace.
At least one person was reported killed in Abu Dhabi due to a missile incident linked to the ongoing conflict. Civil defense teams successfully contained the fire caused by the drone attack, which damaged a fuel tank in the vicinity of the airport, according to the Dubai Media Office.
The UAE has faced increasing aggression from Iran, with reports indicating that over 1,800 missiles and drones have been fired at the UAE since the conflict began. The UAE’s Ministry of Defence has confirmed six deaths attributed to these attacks since the war escalated on February 28, 2026.
In response to the drone strike on the fuel depot, the UAE barred airlines from landing at Dubai International Airport, leading to significant flight disruptions. Prior to the conflict, the airport was allowing approximately 48 flights per hour, but operations are now severely limited.
Observers note that the UAE has been particularly vulnerable to Iranian attacks, with civilian infrastructure being targeted. The Saudi Ministry of Defence has also reported intercepting multiple waves of drones aimed at the region.
The General Civil Aviation Authority did not specify when flights would resume following the closure, leaving travelers and airlines in uncertainty. The situation remains fluid as authorities assess the damage and security measures are heightened.
Iran has sought to justify its attacks on Gulf countries, claiming that the presence of United States military bases in the region makes these states legitimate targets. The UAE, which normalized relations with Israel in 2020, continues to bear the brunt of these hostilities.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the damage and the timeline for restoring normal operations at Dubai International Airport.
