Laylatul Qadr Observances Amid Tensions in the Middle East
Laylatul Qadr, also known as the Night of Power, is set to be observed this year between March 15 and 16, amidst heightened tensions in the Middle East. The Al-Aqsa Mosque compound has been closed for 16 days, the longest such closure since Israel’s occupation of East Jerusalem in 1967, prompting condemnation from eight countries as a violation of international law.
During this sacred night, acts of worship are believed to carry the reward of a lifetime of devotion. However, the mood in 2026 is notably tense due to fears of missile attacks from Iran, which has heightened security concerns across the region.
Thousands of worshippers gathered at the Dargah Hazratbal Shrine in Jammu & Kashmir for night-long prayers, with authorities making special arrangements to accommodate the large influx of devotees. Moulana Adil Noorani expressed the sentiments of many, stating, “We prayed for peace, prosperity and sought forgiveness and mercy from the Almighty.”
In the UAE, the ongoing conflict has seen defenses intercept 16 ballistic missiles and 113 drones in a single wave during the war, underscoring the precarious situation surrounding this year’s observance.
Laylatul Qadr holds deep significance in Islam as it marks the revelation of the first verses of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad. This year, the observance is overshadowed by the ongoing conflict, with one worshipper noting, “This year, war has played spoilsport.”
As worshippers engage in prayers and reflections, they are reminded of the night’s importance, which is traditionally observed on the 27th of Ramadan, known as Shab-e-Qadr, a night considered to be filled with blessings.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the potential for further escalations during this significant period, as communities across the region seek solace and hope for peace amidst the turmoil.
