Football’s global tournaments overshadow other sports, cricket faces oversaturation

Football’s Dominance in the Sporting Landscape
The FIFA World Cup 2026 is currently dominating the sports world, with its extensive schedule and widespread attention. This major tournament, which is approximately halfway through its 103 matches, is drawing significant focus, potentially overshadowing other sporting events.
The scale of the World Cup has grown considerably since earlier tournaments. For instance, the 1976 Uefa European Championship featured only four teams and concluded in five days after four matches. In contrast, the current World Cup format, even with its expanded size, is seen by some as potentially diluting the experience, with calls for further expansion to 64 nations.
This extensive coverage of football’s premier event has led to other sports struggling for media attention. Events like the UK Athletics Championships in Birmingham and the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup have found it challenging to gain significant public awareness amidst the football frenzy.
Cricket’s Challenge with Tournament Frequency
While football maintains the rarity of its major international tournaments, cricket has adopted a different approach, featuring a major international event almost every year. This includes events such as the Champions Trophy, T20 World Cup, and the World Test Championship, alongside women’s and age-group global events.
This frequent scheduling, despite generating significant revenue and attracting large audiences, has led to a perception among some fans that the anticipation and special nature of these tournaments have diminished. Fans recall a time when the rarity of events like the ODI World Cup made them more significant, fostering long-term yearning and emotional investment.

The shift in cricket’s calendar is partly driven by commercial interests, with broadcast deals worth billions. However, this reliance on frequent marquee events, particularly for broadcasters, may be impacting the emotional connection fans have with the sport’s major competitions.
The former coach of India, Ravi Shastri, suggested in 2022 that international cricket should reserve its emotional capital for major tournaments, while franchise cricket could fill the majority of the calendar. This perspective aligns with the growing influence of leagues like the IPL, SA20, and the Hundred.
The Value of Anticipation in Sports
The contrasting approaches of football and cricket highlight the importance of anticipation in maintaining the significance of major sporting events. Football’s adherence to a quadrennial schedule for the FIFA World Cup, European Championship, and Copa America allows for a build-up of excitement and longing among fans.

This scarcity ensures that when these tournaments do occur, they become significant cultural moments, creating lasting memories. The domestic leagues and continental club competitions in football provide regular competitive action, allowing international tournaments to be missed and thus more eagerly awaited.
In tennis, a recent case involving Marketa Vondrousova, who received a four-year ban for refusing an out-of-competition doping test, also garnered attention. This incident, occurring alongside the major football tournament, underscores the challenge other sports face in capturing public interest during periods of intense football coverage.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency’s CEO, Karen Moorhouse, emphasised that unpredictable testing is a crucial tool for protecting clean sport. The Wimbledon Championships, starting on Monday, will benefit from the time difference between the US and London, potentially offering evening sessions for matches.
The return of Serena Williams to the sport is considered a significant marketing asset for the All England Club, even with the ongoing World Cup. The Northampton Saints recently achieved their third consecutive major final, securing two Premiership titles in three years.
