Brazil secured their place in the knockout stages of the World Cup after a 3-0 victory against Scotland in their final Group C match. The game, held at Miami Stadium, saw Vinícius Júnior score two goals, with Neymar also making his return to the national team after a period of absence.
The win on Wednesday ensured Carlo Ancelotti’s side topped their group with seven points. The stadium was at full capacity, with 64,478 fans in attendance to witness Brazil’s performance. Morocco finished second in the group after a 4-2 win against Haiti.
Vinícius Júnior’s Impactful Performance
Vinícius Júnior opened the scoring for Brazil in the seventh minute. The goal came after Scott McKenna failed to clear the ball, allowing Rayan to seize possession and pass to an unmarked Vinícius. The Real Madrid forward then moved the ball past goalkeeper Angus Gunn and tapped it into an open net.
The Brazilian forward has been a consistent scorer throughout the tournament, finding the net in every game so far. His two goals against Scotland brought his tournament tally to four, placing him alongside players like Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland in terms of goals scored, and just one goal behind Lionel Messi.
Vinícius nearly added a second goal before the first hydration break when he took the ball from Jack Hendry. However, the goal was disallowed following a VAR review, with the referee ruling a foul by the Brazilian player. Despite this, Vinícius continued to be a significant threat, moving effectively across the field.

His second goal, described as a decisive blow to Scotland, came just before half-time. Brazil again won the ball high up the pitch, and Bruno Guimaraes delivered a cross to the far post, which Vinícius headed home. This marked his third player of the match award in the tournament.
Brazil’s Dominance and Key Returns
Brazil’s combative approach in the first half allowed them to regain possession frequently, while Scotland struggled to convert their set-piece opportunities, ending the half without any shots on target. Scotland’s manager, Stephen Clark, had anticipated Brazil’s attacking strategy from the start of the match.
In the second half, Brazil continued to press for more goals. Their third goal came from another well-executed midfield play, with Bruno Guimaraes securing his second assist of the match. He maneuvered into the box before setting up Matheus Cunha, who scored his third goal of the tournament.
Cunha, who started on the bench in Brazil’s opening fixture against Morocco, has since established himself as the team’s No. 9. His performance against Scotland, including a clinical side-footed effort that curled past two defenders and the goalkeeper, demonstrated his confidence and ability in the position.
The biggest moment for many fans was the return of Neymar. Manager Carlo Ancelotti brought the 34-year-old onto the field with 14 minutes remaining, marking his first appearance for Brazil since October 2023. Although Neymar’s direct contributions were limited, his presence was met with significant cheers from the crowd.
Bruno Guimaraes, the Newcastle captain, also played a crucial role, providing a well-placed cross for Vinícius’s second goal and a silky assist for Cunha’s third. His pass for Cunha’s goal, which sent Nathan Patterson to the ground, showcased a level of play often associated with a No. 10.
Scotland’s attacking efforts were largely contained, with goalkeeper Alisson maintaining a clean sheet by denying their last chance in the final minutes of the game.
Atmosphere and Fan Engagement
The atmosphere inside Miami Stadium was likened to a Brazil home game, with a large portion of the stands filled with fans wearing yellow. Brazilian celebrities, including Ronaldinho, were also in attendance, with Ronaldinho positioned near the players’ tunnel to greet the team and manager.
The strong Brazilian presence in Miami for the game highlighted the significant investment fans had in the outcome, beyond just securing qualification and potentially first place in the group. The crowd was eager to see the team’s star players perform, and they delivered.
While Scotland’s fans, known as the Tartan Army, also generated noise, the overall sentiment in the stadium was one of anticipation for Brazil’s star-studded lineup. The match reinforced the idea that while team cohesion is vital, individual star power can significantly influence game outcomes, a point underscored by Vinícius Júnior’s performance.
Brazil’s victory over Scotland ensured their progression to the next stage of the World Cup.
