Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo has been issued a five-match ban following a challenge that resulted in a broken leg for Canada midfielder Ismael Kone during a World Cup match. The incident occurred last Thursday in Vancouver during Canada’s 6-0 victory over Qatar, where Madibo was shown a straight red card.
The suspension, handed down by the FIFA disciplinary committee for serious foul play, means Madibo will miss Qatar’s remaining World Cup fixtures. The decision, announced on Wednesday, is subject to appeal. Qatar subsequently faced Bosnia and Herzegovina, losing 3-1 at Seattle Stadium.
Injury and Immediate Aftermath
Kone sustained fractures to both the tibia and fibula in his left leg. He was tackled from behind in the 51st minute of the match. Players on the field immediately recognised the severity of the injury as Kone lay on the ground, holding his leg. He later underwent surgery for the broken bones.
Despite the significant injury, Kone was seen waving to the crowd from his stretcher as he was wheeled off the pitch, receiving a roar of support from the stadium. Nathan Saliba, who replaced Kone, scored Canada’s fourth goal and celebrated by holding up a replica of Kone’s Canadian shirt, pointing to his number eight.

Madibo was visibly distressed after the incident, crying on the pitch and being comforted by his teammates. Following the game, Madibo visited Kone’s dressing room to apologise in person, according to Canada coach Jesse Marsch. Kone later expressed his gratitude on Instagram for the support he received.
Madibo, accompanied by Qatar’s sports minister, also visited Kone to check on his health. The Qatar Football Association stated that this visit, received by the President of the Canadian Soccer Association, reflected a spirit of sportsmanship and strong relationships. Photos released by the association showed Kone, in a wheelchair and wearing his national jersey, hugging Madibo.

Impact on the Teams and Tournament
Kone, who plays for Italian side Sassuolo, will miss the remainder of the tournament due to his injury. He was seen cheering for Canada from the sidelines as they played Switzerland at BC Place in Vancouver on Wednesday, a match Canada lost 2-1.
Canada’s 6-0 win against Qatar marked their first World Cup victory and saw them become the first team outside Europe or South America to score six goals in a World Cup match. Jonathan David achieved Canada’s first-ever World Cup hat-trick in that game. Despite their subsequent loss to Switzerland, Canada qualified for the knockout stages for the first time in their history.
Qatar, on the other hand, needed to defeat Bosnia and Herzegovina to have any chance of progressing from the group stage, but were unsuccessful. Madibo’s five-match ban is not the most extensive suspension issued by FIFA in a World Cup. For instance, Uruguay striker Luis Suarez received a nine-match suspension and a four-month ban from all football-related activities for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Additionally, Italy defender Mauro Tassotti was suspended for eight games in 1994 for an elbow on Spain forward Luis Enrique.
Kone’s injury overshadowed Canada’s significant achievement of their first World Cup win. The 24-year-old midfielder, who previously played for Watford, underwent surgery shortly after the game in Vancouver.

Canada’s journey in the World Cup began with their inaugural match on home soil, followed by their first-ever World Cup point against Bosnia and Herzegovina, which ended in a 1-1 draw. This result provided a crucial springboard for their progression to the knockout stages. Their victory against Qatar solidified their status as a Group B contender. Canada will next face the Group A runner-up in the Round of 32 in Los Angeles on June 28.
